Hey all.

I just reformatted my computer using 3 Emachines Restore CDs.

After this I installed
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU
then
WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU

When I allowed Norton AntiVirus to download all of the virus definitions, it's now no longer working and is completely disabled.

It never used to be like this and I was wondering if there is anything that can be done.

I've Googled but I'm so confused.

Any helpers here? :)

I don't think you want to hear this, but I'd get rid of Norton and go with Avast! (well, I wouldn't, because I can deal with threats manually without the use of an antivirus, but for those that want to take that option, I'd recommend Avast!). Norton has a history of being, well, a bloated mess that can actually cause system conflicts and gives often-inadequate protection. Same goes for McAfee.

While it's kind of a foregone conclusion at this point, are you sure the reformat was really necessary?

I would get rid of Norton ASAP, and replace it with one of the following, AVG, Avast, Avira Antivir, or Microsoft Security Essentials. All of them are really good and have free versions. Also how much RAM do you have? I noticed the screenshot said Norton 2004, which makes it a much older PC.

We use software all the time. We use Norton all the time to clean this particular home/personal desktop. Your opinion as to why Avast is a better consumer choice in software compared to the Norton program.

Thanks a bunch for all of your suggestions.

I think I'm just going to dump Norton because it's such a turd on my computer now.

If I try to enable it, I receive this error of unhappiness.

This sends me here:
Error: "Norton AntiVirus 2004 has encountered an internal program error" (4002,517)

It tries to give me some AutoFix Tool download.

Once I agree, I'm left with this joyful treat.
"Automated task failed.: Download Complete."

Poops.

I'm definitely going with Avast or perhaps forget Antivirus all together.

After all, it's just the internet, how can I lose? :flat4:

Annnnnnnnnnd we're back to poops again! *lol*

I downloaded Sevinst.

sevinst.exe NAVNT
since my current version is 10.0.1.13.

It forced me to restart my computer which, seriously, has to be like the 7th or 8th time now since any tiniest of changes with NAV makes you do this.

I'm still at square zero.

Permission to swear excessively?

Ooh. Wait. Sorry, I forgot that this is Christian forum. :bigeye:

As far as forgoing an antivirus is concerned, it's mainly replaced by other solutions that work in tandem (along with heavily relying on common sense avoidance rules - amending user behavior itself to reduce threat). It's better to avoid the root causes of infection first, than having to resort to after-the-fact removal - after-fact removal being what antivirus software is mostly used for, whether because of age not supporting real-time protection or because that's all you can get with the free versions.

If something does get in, though, it's practically guaranteed that you have to know how to take care of it manually. The 'good' news is that doing it manually is generally very low on the resource-usage scale. It's just on the tedious side.

It also helps to know how to use Linux, since you could boot into that and essentially nuke the virus from orbit - seeing as how Linux can't be harmed by Windows viruses. That takes more care, though, because using Linux to clean up things in C:\WINDOWS\system32 (or other system-critical areas) can brick the Windows partition if things go bad.

Avast! actually does have a Linux version, though - I would assume mostly for the purpose of preventing it from acting as a carrier for Windows viruses, or to actually do cleaning of an infected Windows system from a safe location. In fact, that is the option I'd really suggest - take the necessary precautionary measures on Windows, but have the antivirus software installed on the Linux partition since it's often the case that viruses embed themselves so deep into Windows' system that even going into Safe mode and running the antivirus there won't get them out. You'd have to be physically outside of Windows to get it clean, which an antivirus boot CD or running it from Linux would do.

I used to be a norton's enthusiast but they got more and more expensive and harder and harder to repair when broken and slower to run. I found one firewall quit on me when I upgraded to windows 98SE and uninstalling/reinstalling would not fix it. I had to get a newer version of the firewall to overinstall to fix the problem which leads me to think that nortons withdrew an update file from their download servers when it became too old so nobody could reinstall it from scratch. I detest programs that MUST log into servers to install huge updates I prefer to download patches myself and run the installation so I can tell if the downloads complete or not.

Yeup!

I think I found a forum somewhere that claims the reason why NAV stops working on Windows XP is simply because it's the year 2011 now.

What a bunch of butts. *lol*

I used Norton's when you got free virus updates and didn't have to pay for several years then they decided to start charging for the updates but you could still manually download and install them for free (if you knew how to).

I take it that it installed ok?
Just think...you got a good AV, and you don't even have to pay for it...
All you need now is Iobit360 to keep malware away.It is a great companion to SE, and if later down the road, if you decide that you don't need it later, it is easily uninstalled.

Yes the "pay now" came in when Norton was purchased by Symantec from memory.
