  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ah, now I suffer from depression so I can answer this but it is only what I do - lots of people do different things. For me I can definitely feel it sweeping over me so I get my coat, get the dog's lead and go out for a walk. OK, I may not feel like going out, but it has an almost 100% success rate for me - I get out in the fresh air, get the serotonins buzzing in my head and I feel much better.

Be interesting to see how others cope.

THANKS for the response...I have to confess, sometimes, I don't have victory though I fight it.

My depression is usually brought on by circumstances, so I purpose to take my thoughts captive and turn them to the things of God. Seeing God where the world cannot see Him and where my prideful heart refuses to see.

I am anxious for more responses.

I think you should NOT give into it.

There are many things you can do. First, If this is a recurring or frequent issue, I want to encourage you to discuss this with your personal physician. He or she may be able to help . Especially if this is an ongoing issue, there is no shame in asking for help. Remember that. If this depression has a physical cause, then it probably has a physical cure and you could be feeling better as a result. You are worth that.

Second, I would recommend you read a book called Your Thoughts can Change Your Life by Donald Curtis.
I have a copy of it and it is a great book. When I lived in Texas, for a few years I was involved in the Unity Church there. One of the Many things I have done along the Path. Donald Curtis was the Minister, and though he could come across as superfluous in many ways, the book has some great material and insights. I think it could be summed up as saying
"Think Happy THoughts"
What the jest of this is, what goes through your mond on a daily basis, like when you are driving, doing takss, just thinking in general? are the thoughts something that depress you ? If so then this book may really help.
I would suggest you check your library, if they don't have it you can buy a used copy somewhere online. I also am aware that he has a supposedly similar book called Helping Heaven Happen but I have not read this one and so I would not want to suggest it yet until I do. (But if you want to go ahead)

That book Thoughts can Change your life is a definite recommend... I've heard great things about that book.
to be perfectly honest, I'm a little leary of any book Rickardo recommends in that I know some of his recommendations and they are anything but biblical. In fact, when asked about it's application to the bible he got kind of testy and insulting...I would definitely need more info on the book before even beginning to consider it. Way too many people rely on man's "wisdom" and forget that God gave us answers in the Bible, based on a Godly wisdom...a wisdom that works...Just my two cents...

Depression. I'm not sure about Ricardo's Book but i do agree about the "personal physician" recommendation. My personal physician Is none other than the Great Physician Himself, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When i feel this depression coming on, I tell Jesus all about my troubles, i then begin to praise Jesus name. I praise my loving Lord Jesus, i praise Him and my Great Physician Jesus makes me happy again, no joke this works every time for me. I love my Great Physician Jesus, he healed my depression from doing this and also by not by giving up on my Spiritual Medication ever, Don't stop Hoping in Jesus and He wont stop helping you, and it costs nothing, not one penny. I leaned on the Lord and Praised His name and I'm healed. Although it tries to come back sometimes because of Hateful people, when it does I just tell Jesus all about my troubles and praise His mighty name and before i know it I'm laughing and crying great tears of Joy instead of the tears of awful sorrow. Jesus is indeed the Great Physician. Praise The Lord Jesus, its Gods will and good medicine for a heavy heart.

I like the suggestion, just want to caution any readers, that if your depression needs medications, please don't wait till it's too late...please...

I take meds for my depression (just had to up them as from today :sigh:) - it is too strong for me to cope without medication. However, saying that, I actively pray and ask God to help me through this stage and get great comfort from knowing He is there with me, even though I can't always feel Him. I have a fantastic (Christian) GP too, she has always been there for me, helped me and I trust her advice completely - it's hard to find a good GP you can really trust.

I think that for the vast majority of people, depression is manageable with God, sometimes, however, it's more like a broken leg, where God can just heal it, it is most often an issue for a Dr. and medical care. My warning was for those that needed medical attention as well as biblical truths.

no no If I ever came across as insulting and testy, I apologize because that was not my intent.
Many books I read are not Biblical, and Many of them are good, and the fruits are still good. The Bible has many good Fruits, but it is not the ONLY book that has good fruits. I would never limit myself to just one book.
If I am ever faced with a problem or a challenge, my opinion is to do what works. Your Thoughts Can Change Your Life is an excellent book. You can read it, then if you don't like it, then ok. You will not be harming yourself in reading it. And it may have something useful in it.
I know there are many people who subscribe to the "Bible Only" ideal. I am not one of them, but I try to respect those who do. Regardless of that difference, I have real concern for you and your depression and I want to see you feeling better. I would be happy to talk with you here or do anything reasonable IF it would help you without hurting others.
You cannot get a better fruit than that.

I have personally experienced bouts of depression for over 50 years. It all began when I started to hear voices and sounds in my head when I was a young teenager. I really thought I was possessed or going nuts. I was raised in a good Christian home but was afraid to tell anyone of my problem. So I dealt with it, plunging deeper and deeper into my own self. I ended up being a shy and very quiet child, keeping mostly to myself and my imaginary little world. But through it all, to make a VERY long story VERY short, I ended up facing my demons alone. I am sure that the Holy Spirit had a lot to do with my not committing suicide, which I had contemplated for decades. He was, I am sure, keeping me close to Him until that wonderful day 35 months ago. Occasionally I still have these bouts of depression, but now I recognize just what they are, and always HAVE been. Satan is a tricky foe. He catches us when we're down as often as he traps us into a false sense of security when we're "up". We have to stay alert.

Jesus said many times, "Watch!"

And THAT'S what it's all about. Surely the Holy Spirit is constantly with us, but we have to be the ones who step up to the proverbial plate and USE what our Lord and Savior has given us. We have to apply our faith. We have to say to ourselves, THROUGH OUR ACTIONS, that we will not take this depression lying down. We truly have to be bold and share with one of God's servants our problems. Us Believers ARE NOT in this battle alone. The Holy Spirit has gifted us with MANY of His helpers in our community, our church and our church staff and pastors. Find someone to pray FOR you and WITH you, my brothers and sisters in Christ. USE the faith you have been gifted with. God is FOR you, so how can even the devil harm you?

Heavenly Father, please open the eyes of those here who suffer from depression and anxiety. Lead them to one of Your angels. Press upon their hearts and minds, Lord, that they are loved and cared for. Restore their souls and lift them up to you with Your Mighty Hand. In Jesus Name I joyfully pray.

Medication does help but its not Gods will to stay dependent on these medications, they cost allot of money and have some bad side effects. Stay on your medication but also pray, always pray for God to heal you, never stop. Praise Jesus name even when you don't feel like it. Do this and soon you won't need the horribly expensive medication anymore. Hope in Jesus and praise Him, its not an overnight miracle but a slow process of depending on Jesus more and the awful drug less. God doesn't want you to quit your meds all at once, He knows you need it, but He also knows you need the Lord Jesus, this is why we are so depressed because we don't depend on Jesus enough when people hurt us. There are reasons for this depression, you need to identify the problem, admit to the problem and then tell the lord Jesus all about it, this is how you depend on Him. He wants to hear about it, He wants you to praise Him so you can be healed and not need this medication any more. These drugs do help until you learn to depend on the Lord, you will know when its time to stop the drug because you wont need it anymore, instead you will run to the Lord for Help, you will praise Him and He will make you happy again. The reason for the depression isn't so you will depend on God, but because people don't listen to God when he says we need to love one another. People hurting us is the main reason for depression and also because we want things we cant have until we seek God first as he commands us to. God says we should love others and we don't listen to Him, therefore people hurt us and cause depression.

Its a slow process, be patient with your self, God is very patient with us, He doesn't expect you to be super man and stop your meds all at once. Take your time and your meds, pray to the Lord, praise Jesus name when you feel sad and He will help. Do this and pretty soon you wont need the drugs anymore. I actually find it a blessing now when people hate me because the lord Jesus loves me and he makes me feel better than any drug ever could. It must be noted that you must realize that something is making you feel sad and you must figure out what that is and admit it to yourself, this helps allot in itself. These drugs are not always safe and its just a scam to make drug companies rich, although they do help and are needed temporarily.

Praise the Lord Jesus he truly is the Great physician and he healed my depression, go ahead and hate me, ill run to my Lord Jesus as a small child would and he will love me and he will make me more happy than any drug i ever took, and its free with no side effects. It took a little while to learn to depend on Jesus in this way for me, but it was so worth it. Praise my Lord and savior Jesus Christ, i am healed of depression.

any book that goes against the bible is a problem, no matter how good you think the fruit looks or tastes, if it is counter to scripture, it's fruit is still poison. [quot]e
If I am ever faced with a problem or a challenge, my opinion is to do what works. Your Thoughts Can Change Your Life is an excellent book. You can read it, then if you don't like it, then ok. You will not be harming yourself in reading it. And it may have something useful in it. [/quote] maybe, maybe not, I read the review and it was not consistent with scripture which means it is poison.
I know there are many people who subscribe to the "Bible Only" ideal. I am not one of them,
nor am I, that being said, I am one who believes that it must not counter scripture to be healthy...I base this on tons of research and practical application.
but I try to respect those who do. Regardless of that difference, I have real concern for you and your depression and I want to see you feeling better.
why would you worry, I stated in the OP it was a study in human nature only....the depression I fight is over things like where we live and the death of our son...if I didn't fight depression over such things, I would worry about myself. When you loose someone so very close as we were to our son, depression and the fighting of it, is a natural process of grieving and demonstrates how greatly he was loved, nothing more.
I would be happy to talk with you here or do anything reasonable IF it would help you without hurting others.
You cannot get a better fruit than that.
What do you think you can help me with? I am interested in a study of human nature...I have a few struggles here and there, as everyone does...for that you think I need help? I'm not following why you think this...I miss my son....! That occasionally depresses me, but I fight to not live in that loss, that depression and most all the time, I win that fight, by using and applying biblical principles...what do you think you can add?
