Term limits is the only thing that will save either party.
Term limits are not going to solve anyone's problem. The guys in office are corrupt, everyone agrees about this. The new guys, equally corrupt. The only difference that creating a 4 year or 8 year term limit will make is that we get to cycle though corrupt guys even faster.
In other words, right now, Joe Smith gets elected today and then he spends the next 16 years giving pork to various corporations. In the future, with term limits, Joe Smith gets elected, spend 8 years giving port to various corporations, and then in 2018, Jane Smith will be elected to give port to corporations for 8 years. I can assure you, corporations can find multi-million dollar positions for both Joe and Jane, after all, those guys gave them hundred-million dollar tax cuts, public contracts, or regulatory legislation that just so happens to be quite favorable to industries making widgets in China.
How about this proposal, remove money from the electoral process. Right now, half of our elected officials are millionaires, this is a demographic that represents 1% of the population. The rest of us, more than a little unrepresented and it is no wonder why they keep supporting tax cuts for themselves. Most of these people are not in power because they are brilliant, they are in their positions because they had the financial assets and personal connections to those who had even more in order to raise funding. Remove this from the equation and politicians suddenly can spend non-election years NOT campaigning for more money. How? A public fund that provides all parties that reach a certain signatory threshold to put them on a even level. It won't be much, a few million for state elections and maybe a hundred million or so for national elections. While this seems like a lot of money, it really is only a few bucks for each voter and it will provide a massive hit to pork barrel spending that adds up to the billions at Federal levels. Just think, Unions wont have even a fraction as much influence anymore in the Democratic party, that bailout of the UAW that cost billions may never have even happened.
Other proposals exist, some of them are to remove what essentially amounts to insider trading that exists thanks to the revolving door that exists between Government and industries, but the goal is more or less the same and they all will be implemented when the temperature of Hell goes negative on the Kelvin scale.
