  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a question, since it was not addressed in a pm' i sent way over a week ago i will now post it here.
I was counseled for the 1st time ever.....:o
If i am counseled on something by a mod, does that mean someone reported the post?I am unclear on that.
and if not do they look over the posts in there forum that they moderate and see what is allowed and what is not?
Can you please advise me on this
oh and does the counsel post that i recieved need to stay in my user cp forever since i have been a contributing member since 2005 i believe.could be longer.
if it does stay what is the point in it expiring then?
Thanks for responding.;)

ONE more important question, was the counsel that i recieved suppose to come from a modertor of that froum that i posted in? Are those the rules or can MODS go to any forum in which they choose and make corrections?
(ex mod/admin here) Typically, if you receive a counseling PM it was initiated by someone reporting a post you'd made. The reports go to the moderating team for that area; they debate the post, determine the level of infraction (if any) and the nature of the response and you are notified of their decision.

Mod teams operate differently in the various categories they moderate. It used to be encouraged that they roam the threads and even participate in the discussions - I'm sure that's still the case. It engages the mods with what's going on in their area, acquaints them with the people who typically post there, etc.

If a mod sees a post that is in question, they will report it so it will go into their report queue for proper handling (see above). In egregious cases, they can take unilateral action to remove an offensive post, edit some offensive content etc. - but it still goes to the mod team for final determination. They may restore the post, keep it deleted, edited, etc., depending.

I'm not up on the latest protocols, but I'm pretty sure you can delete the pm at your leisure. Warnings, infractions, counseling PMs etc. all have a period of validity, during which if further infractions/issues occur may add to your total infraction count. Once an infraction passes its "effective until" date, your record is "clear" as far staff is concerned - you start over (zero points, or whatever). It's important though that if in the middle of one infraction period you pay attention to how/what you post so as not to accumulate more points against you.

Generally, an "infraction" is assigned a point value, depending on type and severity. For a given period of time you can accumulate up to a certain number of points before drastic action is taken (e.g. temp or perm ban, etc.). For example, if you're given say a 2-point infraction that lasts 3 months, and the point limit is 4 before drastic action is taken (again, not up on the latest protocols and have forgotten a few specifics) and you accumulate another infraction, this time for 1 point, you're now at 3 and any new infraction (1 point or more) will earn you that drastic action, having reached your allotted limit. At the same time, the first infraction may expire and you'd be down to 1 again. And when it expires, you start over at zero.

Point being, infraction points come with some time frame, after which they disappear. During any period of time there is a limit to the number of infraction points you can accumulate (again, I think it's 4 but don't quote me on that :) ), or have at that point in time. But behave and they will expire eventually and you'll be back at zero, square one with no "record."

Hope that makes sense :).

Why is there a limit to how many reputation point we can have?
It is a limitation on the variable type that holds this information for each member.

It was in fact changed once before - about a year and a half ago, I think. The original field size for that variable was 2^31 (or, 2,147,483, 648); it was changed after a number of people maxed out to 2^63, the current value (or, 9,223,372,036,854,780,000).

The problem with reputation is that it is an exponential function - in other words, it increases exponentially, not linearly. Whereas it took a number of years for people to reach the first limit, it took but a few months for them to max out at the next limit (which is over 4 billion times as large as the first limit).

The next limit would be 2^127 (or, 170,141,183,460,469,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000). I doubt we'll go there due to the massive memory necessary to contain such information for so many people.

Honestly, a total revamping of the reputation system needs to occur to enable the system to work properly - which I doubt will take place either.

Hi,

Is there any way to delete something someone posted on the "Rep" part of my profile? It appears someone "repped" me to flame me, and I'd like to get rid of it. Is there a way I can do that?

Also, do moderators reply to questions we send them?

Thanks
