  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ah, that must've been a small miniority of Greeks. Most came in in the early 1900s to 1920s. Ok, so again, where have you heard the Greeks say they came here before those already in these areas? I haven't. :)

Have you heard of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America? They argue all the time with members of the OCA of who was in the States first. (Just guessing that you may be from one of the Slavic jurisdictions).

The short answer is yes. If you look up their webpage you will see that virtually everyone in the photograph has blonde hair and blue eyes. There never have been any Orthodox Christians in Pella other than the pirest and, perhaps a handful of workers the the Pella Corporation.
I've had a look and your claim of virtually everyone having blonde hair and blue eyes is a gross misstatement.
My eldest daughter has blonde hair and blue eyes and she is Greek. I know many Greek men and women who are likewise blue eyed and blonde. I haven't met many Russians but the ones I have met ran the gamut of physical characteristics.
Aside from that, you offer no evidence that the people you assume to be converts from amongst the locals were deliberately targeted. I myself am a convert to Orthodoxy and I can assure you that it was not so with me.

So please, deal with facts and leave your assumptions out of this discussion, unless of course you can back them up.

Well, I guess you do know the GOAA. And never had a discussion about which jurisdiction was in America first, that's very odd. For the EP has stated that the Greeks were first, which means that they claim the whole country as their jurisdiction. So I'm told.

while out missioning, did you ever see a black russian?
I've drunk a few back in my youth :)

There are many Africans living in Greece, I imagine there are also some in Russia.

Feisty red headed Irish woman [Maureen O'Hara] meets romantic gray haired Greek [Anthony Quinn]....:)
Funny how many people would picture Anthony Quinn if asked about Greeks in the movies.
On the other hand it is just as well his roles were not played by Charlton Heston, given what his surname means in Greek!

I just recalled that a Greek colleague of mine married an Irish redhead over a decade ago. I wonder how they are going :)

That was rather sweet

( and rather quiet for what are thought to be two somewhat feisty ethnoi ^_^)
It wasn't always that way between those 2.
M. O'Hara was a type of "Archie Bunker" bigot in that movie and didn't have a lot of nice things to say about Greeks , especially Anthony Quinn, who was always trying to hit on her.... :D

Ok. If you say so. I'm a member of the GOC, and the present parish I'm in is quite small, and what we are usually discussing outside of the regular spiritual talk is paying the bills and fundraising and helping charities. That's about it. :)

The EP may claim that (I haven't seen any documents, official or otherwise, stating as much) but I believe the Moscow Patriarchate has a stronger claim on US soil than the EP, and I say that as a member of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia which is under the EP. In my not so humble opinion I believe the EP needs to let go and let God. The Orthodox Church does not depend on the survival of the Constantinopolian Patriarchate, nor does the spiritual well being of the many crypto Orthodox in Turkey depend on it. In some ways I think it may actually be a hindrance, but that is only my opinion.
