  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So who goes to hell?

St Silouan is emphasizing the need to consider oneself the "first among sinners" , to cover the faults of our fellow man, to have humility, and to leave the judgment of others up to God who is much more merciful than we can ever hope to be. It's obviously not a literal prophecy regarding what will take place at the last judgment. It's a way of thinking that brings forth repentance and non-judgmentalness.

if that's what the quote means (which I'm sure it does) then do you realize the reason it was responded to so negatively is because it was essentially unhelpful for answering the actual question at hand.

This isn't so much about the nature of hell, but rather how God determines who goes to hell.

What determines who is saved and who isn't.

What is written in God's Word about it? Has He not said so?

"All shall be saved, I alone shall perish."

St Silouan the Athonite

Was he claiming to be Christ? Why would all be saved and he alone perish? Where is that written in God's Word?

Sure it answered the question. It says we are not to judge where any of our fellow humans are to go. That is God's job. :)

As Christ told him one night in prayer, "Keep thy mind in hell and do not despair." :) One has to be familiar with the lives of the Saints and understand about such things that are commonly talked about in books on the Saints, such as humility, humbleness, and praying for your enemies and all the world. Pride comes before the fall. Nice to see you again, brinny.

He does say for us not to judge each other. :) And telling someone they're going to hell is quite a big judgment, wouldn't you say?

I had never heard of him until now......:)

Silouan the Athonite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Silouan the Athonite also sometimes referred to as Saint Silvanus the Athonite (1866, Russia - 1938, Mount Athos) was an Eastern Orthodox athonite hesychast of Russian origin. He was born Simeon Ivanovich Antonov, of Russian Orthodox parents who came from the village of Sovsk in Russia's Tambov region. At the age of twenty-seven, after a period of military service, he left his native Russia and came to the monastic state of Mt. Athos (an autonomous peninsula in Greece) where he became a monk at the Monastery of St Panteleimon, known as "Rossikon", an Orthodox monastery that houses Russian monks yet is, as all the Athonite monasteries, under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople, and was given the name Silouan (the Russian version of the Biblical name Silvanus.)

 And since I'm still in the midst of reading the book on him, his belief about salvation is the two Commandments of Christ: Love God, and love your enemies. For if you love God, you will love all those, friends and enemies. :)

:thumbsup:He must have read the same Bible I do :)

Matthew 5:43 "Ye hear that it was declared 'thou shalt be loving thy neighbour and shall be hating thy enemy'
44 I am saying yet unto ye, be loving! the enemies of ye, be blessing them that are cursing thee, be doing good to them that are hating thee and be praying over those chasing/persecuting thee".

Luke 6:35 Morely be loving! thine enemies, and be doing good, and be lending, nothing expecting, and shall be the wages of ye much, and ye shall be sons of Most-High, that He good/kind upon the ungrateful and wicked. [Proverbs 25:22/Romans 12:20]

Romans 12:20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. [Prove 25:22]

Proverbs 25:22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and YHWH shall reward thee. [Romans 12:20]

Preachers do all the time, or they should do so. The good news can only be shared when the hearers know what the good news is for. What the good news is directly opposite of---> the bad news. The bad news is that those who do not repent go to hell. And indeed it should be spoken.

Yes. I understand, brinny. Pastors/priests do explain about Christ's dying on the Cross for all and His Resurrection. :) And what salvation means (in our Church). But I have never heard any priests that I know of (Orthodox) tell anyone they're going to hell in or outside the church. On the contrary, my priest often says, "The path to hell is paved with the skulls and bones of priests and bishops." For even they do not believe in exhalting themselves into some better position than their flock. :)

what has any of what you posted to do with the message of salvation and the utter direness of sin and how sin must be obliterated before a holy God, through the Saviour Who died an abominable death on a cross to bring life to the dead? For life is IN Jesus the Christ and none other. And life is given through Him through repentence and turning away from sin. Fruits of the Spirit develop after the Life of Christ is in the person who was once dead but is alive in Christ.

All others who have not repented are dead men walking.
