Came across this interesting little offering from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

The Pre-College Saturday School at The University of the Arts has been providing quality arts education to Philadelphia area students for more than 100 years.

About the Pre-College Saturday School: The Pre-College Saturday School at The University of the Arts offers college-level courses designed specifically for high school students in grades 9 through 12. Courses are offered in fine arts, crafts, design, media, writing, and communication.

Nude Models
Many of the Pre-College Saturday School courses use nude models to help students build a strong foundation of observational skills. Students should anticipate the use of nude models in the following courses: Drawing I, Drawing II, Painting I, Painting II, Portfolio Preparation, Figure Drawing, Figure Sculpture, and Watercolor Painting. Students are expected to behave with maturity and professionalism in the presence of a model.

So, what do you think: would you allow your 14 yo daughter to gaze at a naked man, or let your son carefully look over a naked woman?

Appropriate offering for kids this age or not?

Probably.

I would hope that if we were in Rome and saw the magnificent "David" statue, that my 14 year old would be mature and fine with that - and not make rude sexual comments. I was a LOT younger than 14 when my parents took my to art galleries where nudity was a part of the art (not infreqently, religious art!). Been to the Vatican?

So you see no difference in sculpted or painted naked adult and one in real life. Interesting.
I guess the situation wouldn't be sexualised... hmm, imagine the poor models... 14 year old boys will see sex in blank surfaces, I doubt they'd be able to distance themselves from the situation.

I went to see the movie 'Watchmen' recently. In it, a glowing blue superman's 'junk' is frequently exposed, and there are points when you see a male's butt and a female's breasts. Giggling erupted throughout the theater during all of these exhibitions.

So, my answer would be that no, I don't find these sort of offerings appropriate for fourteen year-olds.

No...

I do not think it is cool, and I do not think drawing naked people is really a high form of art.

And really, I am not into this new hippie bologna that 'ohhhhh the human form, wa wa wee wow' 'oohhhh nothign wrong with nudity.'

I figure... Your goods are your goods for a reason, and they should stay your goods.

If you ask me, it's just a ploy to get more 14 year old boys to attend the classes (be honest... going to drawing class on your free Saturday doesn't exactly sound 'cool' to a 14 year old, as far as I can remember myself being 14 :p)

If that's actually the case, it would be morally unsound; they would basically be selling the opportunity to ogle a real-life naked woman to minors.

If the class was already full before they introduced the naked models, and they honestly just switched to naked models for purely artistic/educational reasons, then I don't have a problem with it.

So I guess you think that the magnificently painted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is what? Porn? Michaelangelo's "David" is what? Smut? These are great works of art. You must learn that nudity is not always sexual. It is the way in which the nudity is presented that makes it sexual or not. There are a great many classic pieces of art that depict the human form in nakedness, yet do not portray the nude body in a sexual manner.

You do realize, I hope, that both of those sentences are a purely cultural construct, right?
Many cultures throughout the world have seen nothing wrong (and not in the wa wa wee wow way) with female breasts, the male penis, etc.
Walking around naked in most areas can be a bad idea due simply to the variances in weather and temperature (not to mention protection of "your goods"), but nudity as art is a time honored (and accepted) tradition ("I'll take the Sistine Chapel for $500, Alex")

If the person (child if you must) is taking this experience as a sexual one, not an artistic one, then I would say the child doesn't belong. At the same time, I am not sure how the actual laws handle this issue (much the same as what would happen if one of the students asked to do the modeling him/herself)?

There is nudity, and there is porn, and the dirtier ones mind is, the less they can see the difference.

14 year old girls could do with an education in what the male form looks like before they undergo the, er, practical exam.

14 year old boys know more about the female form than the model herself.

Not so sure... at 14 I didn't know more than the biology book I had for school taught.

Yeah the appreciation of the human body, pre-dates "new hippy bologna", in fact it wasn't that frowned on until recently for grown men to appreciate the form of other males. Not necessarily engage in homosexuality, but to appreciate the body.

I wouldn't send my child to that kind of class, although I appreciate fine art as much as the next person.

Put me in the camp that doesn't understand the idea behind the beauty of nude art. As a Christian, we know that Adam and Eve covered themselves after they sinned, they felt ashamed. While I truly revel at what our God has created, I don't think it's appropriate for people to oggle it. Whether or not fine art consitutes oggling is a different story.

What I do know that is that I don't know many 14 year olds who would make it through a class like that without giggling or tee-heeing or turning it into something sexual. Shoot, I don't think any of the seniors in my high school class could make it through that class.

Painting the nude body for artistic purposes ought to be left to those in higher education studying for a degree involving art.

This was a very disjointed post, but I bet y'all will still understand it, maybe better than I did!!

Exhibit A. Thank you Christanity for telling me I need to be ashamed of my naked body.
