• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I will hedge my bets, that those who say Sunday is the right day to use, certainly do not avoid 'work' in the same way sabbath keepers do.

What I find interesting is that the sabbath (the real one) actually was a capital crime for not keeping it. No matter which position you hold, the fact it is capital should be a wake up call for us all.

Wow, nice point cyberlizard.

Dan 7:25 And 1) he shall speak [great] words against the most High, and 2) shall wear out the saints of the most High, 3) and think to change times and laws: 4) and they (the saints) shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Speaks against God the Father.
Wears out the saints.
Changes times and laws.
Saints given unto him for 1260 years.

Who or what could have possibly fulfilled this prophecy in recent history?

GE:
There was scarcely a law given that did not have death for transgression. If you didn't remove leaven on Nisan 14, you were supposed to be killed. The Sabbath law isn't different. Just llok at Adam and Eve: This a beautiful tree with beautiful fruit, good to look at good to eat of, but the day you eat of it, You shall surely die!

You think it's any different today under the Law of Christ? In the old times if you hated your brother in your heart no one could kill you for it. Under the Christ-Law if you hate someone you are a murderer, and must pay for it with your life! The Law of Christ has NO loopholes for transgression. I tshows NO mercy ever ... but ... through and in Jesus Christ.

You think it was different for them under the 'Old Law'? What then did God - HIMSELF - kill an animal for to make clothes for this transgressor Adam? It was NO different then, as far as MERCY is concerned; only as far as LAW was concerned.

You cannot get away from the Law of God because you cannot get away from GOD!

You think you discard of God's Sabbath only because the death was its reward? Then wait till he comes on the clouds to judge. Woe !

Did anyone involved in this thread ever establish the NEED for Christians,
saved by faith in Jesus Christ under the new covenant, to observe and
keep the "sabbath" day as given to Israel at Sinai?

Another way to put this is - WHY would Christians need to or be required
to keep a day of rest as given to Israel when they came up ouyt of Egypt?

What would be the point ?

Conversely, has anyone that has been involved with this thread ever establish that there is NO NEED for Christians, saved by faith in Jesus Christ under the new covenant, to observe and keep the sabbath day as given to Israel at Sinai?

Of course that begs the question as to who is Israel and what constitutes membership in the tribe of Israel.

Another way to put this is - WHY would Christians need to or be required to keep a day of rest as given to Israel when they came up ouyt of Egypt?

What constitutes membership in the tribe of Israel? Who came out of Egypt, Israelites only or a "mixed multitude?" What were the requirements for becoming an Israelite if one wasn't born an Israelite?

What would be the point ?

See Exodus 20:8-11 for the point in keeping the sabbath.

Proving a negative is the “back door” way of proving things, but I will go there.

There is NO NEED! Christians saved by faith in Jesus Christ are under a different COVENANT. There is no stipulation or requirement within the NEW covenant for Christians to observe any sabbath of any type.

One covenant (the old) was given at Sinai to the physical nation of Israel.

The other covenant (the new) is given/offered to the entire world.

I have no more obligation to follow the requirements of an OLD covenant today than I have to pay money on the mortgage for the last house I lived in.

WHY would anyone today (with the possible exception of a misinformed Jew) feel the need to follow an old covenant that was given only to the Jews?

RND said - Of course that begs the question as to who is Israel and what constitutes membership in the tribe of Israel.

This response did not answer my question did it? >>>Why would Christians be required to keep a day of rest that was given to Israel?

The OLD covenant was given to physical Israel at Sinai – Deut. 5:2-5.
It was a sign between them and God because the Jews had no rest in Egypt.

Today Christians (spiritual Israel) have another covenant, a different covenant to observe and follow that includes no sabbath.

It is a rather simple matter. Christ never authorized a “sabbath” for Christians.

Now, can anyone show obligation or reason for Christians to keep the sabbath?

What is the sign that you are worshipping the beast... which day does he declare as his and puts the penalty of no buying of selling? We have established the the Holy One of Israel has declared the Sabbath [the real one] is his... that leaves six days to choose to worship on.

Fortunately, I don't see it that way. I see it as "affirming a positive." The 4th Commandment is the only "positive" commandments given by God.

There is NO NEED! Christians saved by faith in Jesus Christ are under a different COVENANT. There is no stipulation or requirement within the NEW covenant for Christians to observe any sabbath of any type.
Agreed! No more going to the brazen alter with an animals to pray over, to kill, to drain the blood, wash the internal organs in the laver, take the blood and place it on the horns of the golden alter, etc., etc.

Yep "that" law has been done away with.

One covenant (the old) was given at Sinai to the physical nation of Israel.
And what constituted "Israel?"

The other covenant (the new) is given/offered to the entire world.
So was the "old."

I have no more obligation to follow the requirements of an OLD covenant today than I have to pay money on the mortgage for the last house I lived in.
Really? Does that mean you can engage in homosexuality with other men and not have it called by it's proper name....sin? In the "old" covenant you would be stoned to death for such a crime against God's law. Under the "new" covenant God' has chosen to deal with sin through the blood of the passover lamb, Jesus Christ.

See the difference? Homosexuality is still a sin. It's just that it is dealt with differently.

WHY would anyone today (with the possible exception of a misinformed Jew) feel the need to follow an old covenant that was given only to the Jews?
Who's suggesting that?

RND said - Of course that begs the question as to who is Israel and what constitutes membership in the tribe of Israel.

This response did not answer my question did it? >>>Why would Christians be required to keep a day of rest that was given to Israel?
Because "Christians" are actual adopted members of the tribe of Israel headed by a King of King and Lord or Lord's named Jesus Christ.

The OLD covenant was given to physical Israel at Sinai – Deut. 5:2-5.It was a sign between them and God because the Jews had no rest in Egypt.
And non-Israelites were required to observe it and respect it when sojourning with the Israelites. What you're comments are equal to would be saying that a man Canada is not responsible to obey the laws of the United States.

Today Christians (spiritual Israel) have another covenant, a different covenant to observe and follow that includes no sabbath.
Gee, that sounds sooooo nice. Too bad there is -zero- scripture, either in the Old Testament or the New, that can validate such a short-shighted view. BTW, save all your Acts 20:7, Acts 15, Romans 14 and Hebrews 4 and 1 Corinthians 16:1-3 blasts. Re-read the thread. They've all been adequately addressed.

It is a rather simple matter. Christ never authorized a “sabbath” for Christians.
And He never took away either. He is the Lord of the Sabbath. Do you follow the Lord?

Now, can anyone show obligation or reason for Christians to keep the sabbath?
I don't know. Read the Bible cover to cover a few times?

Psa 1:2 But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.<--------Does this apply to Christians?

Psa 19:7 The law of the LORD [is] perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD [is] sure, making wise the simple.<--------Does this apply to Christians?

Psa 94:12 Blessed [is] the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;<--------Does this apply to Christians?

Psa 119:174 I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law [is] my delight.<--------Does this apply to Christians?

And here's the kicker!

2Ti 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:<--------Does this apply to Christians?

Tell me and everyone here Apollos1 what "scripture" was Paul referring too when he wrote to Timothy seeing that the "New" Testament hadn't been compilied yet? Was Paul including the Ten Commandments and the Mosaic law here?

Paul was writing to Timothy roughtly 20 to 30 years after the death of Christ and he was still saying that the scriptures were still good for teaching and instruction. If the "New" covenant started immediately upon Christ's death at Calvary then why was Paul saying 30 years later that the "old" scriptures were still good for something?

Hello RND –

Apollos said - There is no stipulation or requirement within the NEW covenant for Christians to observe any sabbath of any type.
RND said - Agreed!

Then we are having this discussion because you do not know which covenant you want to follow. Specifically, you want to include part of the Old covenant, ei. the “sabbath”, with following the New covenant.

Apollos said - One covenant (the old) was given at Sinai to the physical nation of Israel.(Deut 5:2-5).
RND said again - And what constituted "Israel?"

In this context Israel would be a physical descendent of any of the 12 tribes from the sons of Jacob who had been circumcised (if male).
This is the second time you have alluded to “What constitutes Israel?”
Tell me what you mean and cut out all the word play. More below on this…

Apollos said - The other covenant (the new) is given/offered to the entire world.
RND said - So was the "old."

LOL ! I guess you think the whole world was at Sinai when Moses came down??
How will you prove the supposed obligation?

Apollos said - I have no more obligation to follow the requirements of an OLD covenant today than I have to pay money on the mortgage for the last house I lived in.
RND replied - Really? Does that mean you can engage in homosexuality with other men and not have it called by it's proper name....sin?

This is a misapplied argument. First you need to decide which covenant to keep – then you can determine from that covenant what is proper to do and not do.

I have NEVER had obligation to the OLD covenant made with the nation of Israel, which included the 10-C, however “positive” it may be viewed by you or anyone.

I have every obligation to the NEW covenant ratified by the blood of Jesus Christ and based upon faith in Jesus Christ. This NEW covenant has the efficacy to save all men everywhere today – the Old did not!
The NEW covenant condemns homosexuality (as well as heterosexuality outside of marriage) as well as a number of other sins – see 1 Corinthians 6:9ff and Galatians 5:19ff .
The NEW covenant also has a number of precepts and commands for Christians today not found in the OLD covenant made with Israel.

All of this matter is as simple as knowing which covenant to follow. – 2 Cor 3:6.
Paul made this same argument. – Gal. 1:6, Col. 2:13-14.
Why put yourself under a “yoke of bondage”? Galatians 5:1-4
If you follow one point, you must follow ALL points. – James 2:10, Gal. 5:3.
The 4th commandment is a part of the OLD covenant, not the NEW!
- - - - - - - - - -

Apollos said – [Your] response did not answer my question did it? >>>Why would Christians be required to keep a day of rest that was given to Israel?
RND said - Because "Christians" are actual adopted members of the tribe of Israel headed by a King of King and Lord or Lord's named Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Christ is also the head of the church – Eph. 1:22, Col. 1:18. But there is not one passage to support your idea that Christians are adopted into the physical tribe of Israel and required to follow the parts and pieces of the Old covenant that you want them to follow today.

Apollos said - The OLD covenant was given to physical Israel at Sinai – Deut. 5:2-5.It was a sign between them and God because the Jews had no rest in Egypt.
RND said - And non-Israelites were required to observe it and respect it when sojourning with the Israelites.

This is rationalizing. If you were to prove that those who become Christians today are somehow “adopted” into the physical tribe of Israel, this still would not change which COVENANT followers of Christ are to observe today. Not even Jews are to follow the Old covenant today !
- - - - - - - - - -

Apollos said - Today Christians (spiritual Israel) have another covenant, a different covenant to observe and follow that includes no sabbath.
RND patronized - Gee, that sounds sooooo nice.

Oooooh! It does sound “nice” doesn’t it !
I am not certain which point above you attempted to patronize me on…
– spiritual Israel – Romans 2:28, 9:3,6, Col. 2:11, Gal. 3:7, 6:15, Php 3:3.
-that we are to observe the NEW covenant – Luke 22:20, Romans 11:27, Heb. 7:22
–or the point that there is NO sabbath in the NT for Christians today. You agreed !!
Your position is not "short-sighted", it is BLIND!

As for those scriptures you list above, I will use them if needed. Can I expect the same scant answers given as before if I used them?
- - - - - - - - - -

Apollos said - It is a rather simple matter. Christ never authorized a “sabbath” for Christians.
RND hopes - And He never took away either. He is the Lord of the Sabbath. Do you follow the Lord?

Oh ! But yes Christ did !!! See…

Hebrews 9:13 –
“And for this cause he is the mediator of a new covenant, that a death having taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they that have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.” …-and-…

Hebrews 10:9 –
“…then hath he said, Lo, I am come to do thy will. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.”

The FIRST is gone – the SECOND has been established! Jesus was Lord of the “sabbath” while it was around, but the Lord chose to change things for followers of the NEW covenant. You just aren’t paying attention to what the Lord has done! You want to pick and choose the stuff out of the old covenant you think we need to do today without any regard for what the Lord has established. You are living in the past and certainly don’t know what or who “Israel” is today, or understand what the qualities of a covenant is.

You can always tell who are Yeshua's friends..

NIV Jn 15:14 You are my friends if you do what I command.

Jn 15:10 –Jn 15:14 NKJV
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.

Apollos asked - Now, can anyone show obligation or reason for Christians to keep the sabbath?
RND replies - I don't know. Read the Bible cover to cover a few times?

LOL ! I will take that as a big NO! No one can show any obligation to keep the “sabbath” under the new covenant today. Afterall, what would Christians be “resting” from ??? (cf. Exodus 31:13,17, Deut 5:15.)
- - - - - - - - - -

Psa 1:2 But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.<----
Jesus has ALL authority today in heaven and on earth – Matthew 28:18.
Today this means the “law of Christ” – Galatians 6:2 which is contained in the new covenant – not the old.

Psa 19:7 The law of the LORD [is] perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD [is] sure, making wise the simple.<-------- See answer above. But does this apply to animal sacrifices??? Does it apply to the closing of the gates???

Psa 94:12 Blessed [is] the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;<-------
See answer above.

Psa 119:174 I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law [is] my delight.<--------
Today this MUST mean the “law of Christ” today as there was no salvation under the old law. There is certainly no salvation connected with “sabbath” keeping !!! In fact, if you did not keep the “sabbath”, you got a rock in the head! How “positive” is that?

RND offered - And here's the kicker!

2Ti 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:<--------Does this apply to Christians?

Oh, I can kick this a little farther than you can…

Romans 15:4 - For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope.

See also 1 Corinthians 10:11 !

RND then said - Tell me and everyone here Apollos1 what "scripture" was Paul referring too when he wrote to Timothy seeing that the "New" Testament hadn't been compilied yet? Was Paul including the Ten Commandments and the Mosaic law here?

Hey “everyone”, in all three of these passages Paul tells us that there are things to learn and profit from and see by example by reading scripture, including the OLD Testament.

What Paul does not say in these verse, and what RND needs to learn, is that not all scripture is authoritative today for the worship and practice of the NEW Testament church. RND needs to decide which COVENANT he wants to accept! THIS is the KICKER !!!

RND said - Paul was writing to Timothy roughtly 20 to 30 years after the death of Christ and he was still saying that the scriptures were still good for teaching and instruction. If the "New" covenant started immediately upon Christ's death at Calvary then why was Paul saying 30 years later that the "old" scriptures were still good for something?

As the “executors” of the Christ’s testament, the NT era began on Pentecost in Acts 2 with the Apostles proclaiming the first gospel sermons to men from all around the world. But I never said that the OT had no use today. While your approach is argumentative in nature, there are some good points to be made.

Many things can be learned from OT scripture – and this is Paul’s point. The -3- major things I think we can learn from OT scripture (and it is not limited to only 3 things) is:
-How God deals with man.
-God always keeps His word!
-God has always provided for the faithful.

All that happened within the body of the OT does not authorize one practice or one item of teaching for the NT church. Christ was given ALL authority just before He descended into heaven. This is how Paul could say…

Colossians 3:16 - And whatsoever ye do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Once again, knowing what you should do today, and knowing which covenant you should observe today as a Christian, is as easy as knowing Who has all authority to make such decisions. And He did not authorize any “sabbath” for His people today in His new covenant!

Hello RND –

Howdy!

First Apollos, try quoting my entire reply, that would be very helpful and extremely insightful. I said, "Agreed! No more going to the brazen alter with an animals to pray over, to kill, to drain the blood, wash the internal organs in the laver, take the blood and place it on the horns of the golden alter, etc., etc."

The "new" covenant has no requirement "to observe any sabbath of any type." This is so true. There is a explicit requirement to observe Go'd seventh-day Sabbath however. Do you see the point that was being made when I said, "Agreed?"

Second, do you understand that we are no longer required to confirm the the covenant with God by "going to the brazen alter with an animals to pray over, to kill, to drain the blood, wash the internal organs in the laver, take the blood and place it on the horns of the golden alter, etc., etc."

The "rules" of life are now entered into the heart of everyone.

More below on this…
Well, it's simple and honestly there isn't really any "one play" going on here. It's just basic understanding that is so often overlooked it is surprising. Israel then, just as Israel is now, was not only made up of the "physical" descendants of Abraham but the "spiritual" descendants as well.

No one, outside of those that had taken in the Passover lamb, were allowed into the sanctuary and allowed to partake in the ceremonial rituals of atonement. Same holds true today. No one is allowed into the "Heavenly Sanctuary" until they take in the Passover lamb.

Apollos said - The other covenant (the new) is given/offered to the entire world.
RND said - So was the "old."

LOL ! I guess you think the whole world was at Sinai when Moses came down??
Don't LOL too soon until you understand all the facts.

The "old Covenant" was offered to the Children of Israel, the mixed multitude that came out of Egypt with them, and it was available and open to any sojourner or stranger that wanted to be apart of that covenant.

How will you prove the supposed obligation?
The Bible helps.

Misapplied? Have you ever considered the "rules" of the "New" Covenant are harder to uphold than the rules of the "old." See Matthew 5, 6 and 7.

I have NEVER had obligation to the OLD covenant made with the nation of Israel, which included the 10-C, however “positive” it may be viewed by you or anyone.
Agreed. However, how then do you enter into the "Heavenly Sanctuary" now?

I have every obligation to the NEW covenant ratified by the blood of Jesus Christ and based upon faith in Jesus Christ. This NEW covenant has the efficacy to save all men everywhere today – the Old did not!
If I were you I'd read the "faith" Hall of Fame in Hebrews 11 and tell me if there is anyone that has been saved by keeping the old covenant. the law has never saved anyone and the law doesn't save anyone now. Righteousness has always been by faith. That doesn't change the law. It doesn't the way faith is viewed.

The NEW covenant condemns homosexuality (as well as heterosexuality outside of marriage) as well as a number of other sins – see 1 Corinthians 6:9ff and Galatians 5:19ff .
The "new" covenant doen't say that I can't marry my sister or my dog like the "old" did. Does that mean I'm free to marry my sister or my dog?

The NEW covenant also has a number of precepts and commands for Christians today not found in the OLD covenant made with Israel.
Really? Name them.

It sounds as if you are trying to "have you cake and eat it to" theology. Throw out the stuff I don't like and accept the things I do.

Do you understand the difference between what "law" was being spoken of? Look, the 10 Commandments is a mirror that points out sin. It tells us the nature and character of God. It was kept "inside" the Ark. The "law," the Mosaic, ceremonial law, was a way to point the sinner to the salvation offered by God through grace - righteousness by faith and it was kept on the "outside" of the Ark.

Do the distinction of inside/outside mean anything at all to you?

Be serious.

Jhn 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

The entire Bible is a metaphor for how those that join themselves to the nation of Israel and it's King (Jesus) are redeemed. Salvation is never offered to anyone except the nation of Israel. There are just too many verses and cites to name here but suffice to say this. The promised "seed" that was to come through Abraham is Jesus. All that accept that simply promise become "adopted" sons of Abraham. See Romans 4, Ephesians 2 and Galatians 3.

Indeed! It's also called using "common sense." It can't be ignored in hope of it going away.
If you were to prove that those who become Christians today are somehow “adopted” into the physical tribe of Israel, this still would not change which COVENANT followers of Christ are to observe today. Not even Jews are to follow the Old covenant today !- - - - - - - - - -
Who said "Jews" of today aren't required to follow the "old" Covenant? Now, when you find that answer in the Bible then you'll find the answer as to how the gentiles become "adopted" members of the family Israel.

Keep this in mind. People cannot be adopted into a "mythical family" or a family that doesn't exist. People cannot be "heirs" unless they belong to the family.

Gal 3:29 And if ye [be] Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Apollos said - Today Christians (spiritual Israel) have another covenant, a different covenant to observe and follow that includes no sabbath.
RND patronized - Gee, that sounds sooooo nice.

Glad you finally caught on somewhat. But there is no "spiritual" Israel. It's a real family and a real nation with a real King. The "new" covenant is harder to keep and observe than the "old" and I never agreed that there is no longer a 7th day sabbath, I agreed to "to observe any sabbath of any type."

As for those scriptures you list above, I will use them if needed. Can I expect the same scant answers given as before if I used them?

Scant? I call it being direct.

Pro 29:20 Seest thou a man [that is] hasty in his words? [there is] more hope of a fool than of him.

He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second
Neither of these verses give anyone, let alone "born again Christians" permission to steal, commit adultery, worship other god, bear false witness, covet anothers property, use the Lord's name in vain, bow down to graven image or worship another God.

Christ didn't die on the cross to give license to sin.

The FIRST is gone – the SECOND has been established! Jesus was Lord of the “sabbath” while it was around, but the Lord chose to change things for followers of the NEW covenant.

I'd love to see one verse, just one, from the Gospels that confirms that there is no more sabbath. Just one.

You just aren’t paying attention to what the Lord has done! You want to pick and choose the stuff out of the old covenant you think we need to do today without any regard for what the Lord has established.

Actually, I think this is what the "there is no more sabbath crowd" likes to do simply because they still like to use the Mosaic law to point out certain sins.

You are living in the past and certainly don’t know what or who “Israel” is today, or understand what the qualities of a covenant is.
Apollos, everyone has an opinion.

What I find so ironic about your screen name is that the Apollos in the book of Acts preached just the opposite of what you believe. And he preached on the Sabbath!

this is becoming a silly thread.

I agree.

BTW, I like your quote from Psalm 118. I also like the preceding verses:

The stone which the builder's rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord's doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
