  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I mean no insult, but do you guys realize how strange this thread looks to a non-Christian? I am completely gobsmacked here.
Yeah, it does lean heavily to the weird, doesn't it; totally devoid of any real and substantially serious bible study leaning, instead, toward total philosophical rationalizations which we know is antithetical to everything taught in the scriptures.

Oddly enough it is usually Creationists who appeal to philosophy here.
Odd, indeed; but, then, that popular humanistic approach is always easier for those just starting out than it is for them to right-off-the-bat steadfastly live in that unquestioningly leap-off-the-cliff state of faith Kierkegaard wrote of; then, again, too, that's, hopefully, exactly what a lifetime is for-learning to live solely on faith.

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

See the part I bolded? Please at least understand a verse before you use it to try and use it.

You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. James 2:24

P.S. You have eight commas, two semicolons, and seven hyphens in one sentence. Outstanding.

And damm proud of it.

Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could take you under the table
David Hume could out-consume
Schopenhauer and Hegel
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as sloshed as Schlegel
There's nothing Nietszche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist

Its sort of like the old Eddie Murphy/SNL spoof on Mr. Rogers.

After he teaches the kids to say something highly offensive to Mom, he says, "If she slapped you, you said it right."

Ahh, but to philosophize is to follow after the traditions of men and the rudiments of the world; certainly, that is not what is referred to as following after Christ.

Justified ONLY if it is faith manifested.

I Timothy 6:20-21 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Good grief no it is not! Paul is talking about specific man-centred philosophies, not every school of philisophical thought. At Mars Hill when Paul was debating with the Greeks, was he philosophising or was he appealing to scripture? Acts 17, check it out, esp v28.

You seem to be another one of these Christians who think that God just implants scripture into our brains bypassing all thought processes!

A dubious transaltion back in 1611 when every other time the AV translated gnosis it used the word 'knowledge'. Given the changes in the English language over the last 400 years there is simply no basis for translating it that way. Paul was not talking about modern science. He was talking about 'knowledge'. If there was any hidden meaning in his statement, it was a prophetic warning about the gnostic heresies in the centuries after he wrote the epistle.

Philosophy is man-centered, not Christ-centered.

You cannot mix the Godly with the humanly, the twain shall never meet.
