  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've seen that quote before and it's full of, well, nothing really. It makes no real statement of Christian faith.
Well it means nothing to you, and then there is nothing more to say to you. Obama claims he is Christian and I believe him.

Good thing we don't have to rely on your evaluation of his faith, neither does he....neither does God.

I haven't evaluated his faith. I merely said I don't know because there is insufficient information

Obviously one calling himself a Christian isn't good enough for you.

What would it take for Obama to say that would convince you that he was Christian? Specifics please.

I did. I thought that was obvious
He has pandered to a religious group. As a secularist I don't care who he panders to but I can appreciate how a theist would prefer to keep the pulpit pure and free of the political stain. I expect every candidate that professes a belief to pander to the largest demography that holds similar convictions, it's a no-brainer.

So what legal precedence has been established that makes this a first amendment violation? As the accuser you are obligated to provide.....

We're at the point where if Jesus Christ Himself came down, visited Mach and said "Hey, this Barack Obama character is one of my followers" he would still deem it insufficient.

Heres info about what obama's church believes as it appeared on their website before it was brought to the publics attention and then taken down in favor of a less racist statement of beliefs. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1773598/posts
That's not racist. I truly don't understand the ignorance on these topics. Is it that hard to understand that Black in America is a cultural term and a racial term? Slapping White in the place of Black is completely different and to pretend that it's not is intellectually dishonest.

White is not a cultural term. Then why is Black a cultural term? Black is a cultural term just as Irish and Italian are cultural terms. African Americans do not have a connection to their nations of origin due to the slave trade (and don't pull out the red herring about African nations involved in the slave trade). As a result, they are "African" Americans as opposed to Nigerian Americans or Ethiopian Americans. In fact, the red herring actually shows how Africans were much like their European counterparts, no was selling "their people," it was the equivalent of an Englishman selling a Frenchman (but that's another topic).

You may now ask, why do they bring up race? They didn't bring it up, slavery and segregation did that. The exclusion of blacks from partaking in American society is what created Blacks, the cultural term. They were excluded because of the color of their skin, so obviously they formed a connection with other people that were excluded from American society, who just so happen to be black. And given the shared history (you know descendants of slaves from the South), they bonded. And given their separation from Africa, yet only retaining certain elements of their original culture, they created their own Black culture.

So when these churches talk about the Black family, it is akin to Italian Americans wanting to strengthen Italian culture within the family. There is nothing racist about that. In addition, unlike every group that wants to strengthen White families, it is not about elevating Blacks above all other groups the way Whites do (I hope people do read into this statement). Are there Black hate groups like this? Yes, but this church is not one of those.

Can we please stop the ignorant comparison of interchanging white with black and saying the blacks must be racist because "If white people did it, it must be racist." It is racist because white is not a culture.

Here is what he says.

"It was because of these newfound understandings that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ on 95th Street in the Southside of Chicago one day and affirm my Christian faith. It came about as a choice, and not an epiphany. I didn't fall out in church. The questions I had didn't magically disappear. But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side, I felt that I heard God's spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth."
Oh, JustOneWay  You'll need the hug for what will surely follow in this thread.

I've posted exactly that quote, but Mach has made it clear on more than one occasion that he doesn't accept that as a profession of faith. Apparently, the exact wording matters. Never mind that Jesus considered it enough for the thief on the cross to simply ask to be remembered. Times have changed. Now you have to conform to current profession of faith standards if you want to be recognized as being a Christian.

It may seem that way, but I don't believe its true. I don't think anyone complained when President Bush spoke in this church. In fact, I believe he has spoken in many churches without a single complaint. It only becomes a problem when either side starts campaigning in churches, instead of talking about the issues.
Not only do they not complain, Grizzly. They post it on the official White House website.

And I love this!!!

Oh wow....he's doing the "red letter" quotes DNC strategists have suggested candidates use. Limit the quotes from the Bible to the words of Jesus.
Oh, that's beautiful!! Yeah, those Democrats! They just quote Jesus. They don't pay attention to real Scripture.

Oh, that's priceless! ::wipes tear::

I'm still not seeing the First Amendment violation here.

Why did Obama campaign at a church? Probably because it was a bigger crowd than the McDonald's down the street.

Why did he invoke Jesus? Well duh, because he was campaigning at a church. If he were at the McDonald's, he probably would've ordered a Big Mac and fries.

Interesting....when Obama spoke about what I posted, he also mentioned Alan Keyes questioned Obama's faith, and Keyes even went as far to claim that Jesus would not vote for Obama ^_^ Gotta love the Christian who is holier than thou.

Notice Machzer0 hasn't responded to my question.

Let me get this straight. Obama wants to be president, but if we want to get the information we need to find out more about him, we have to pay him for it? No thank you.

Oh, MachZer0. Let me tell you about this really cool thing called public libraries. I swear, you're just going to be blown away. I work at one, see, and the really awesome thing? We let you check books out and take them home for free! It's the coolest thing.

Libraries have a liberal bias. ;)

Those libraries are a liberal socialist conspiracy against America!

As I heard a conservative say once: "Why should my tax dollars go to books I'll never read". Gotta love their thinking.

I imagine that nothing he said or did would ever be good enough for you.

As I said...

I've seen that quote before and it's full of, well, nothing really. It makes no real statement of Christian faith.

...nothing would ever be good enough for you concerning Obama. I agree with invisibletrousers that even if Jesus Himself decended from Heaven and told you face to face that Obama was the most devout of His followers you would still not believe it.

If he says he is Christian it is good enough for me and it should be good enough for you. Until he does something for me to doubt him all I have is his word about his faith. You should put politics below this and embrace him as a Brother in Christ even if he is on the opposite end of the political spectrum.

I did. I thought that was obvious

Obvious to me too. The doubt standard is wearisome isn't it? Conservative Christians mention faith in the political arena and the constitution is being shredded, "theocrats" are on the march, the republic is in danger.

Liberal Christians mix religion and politics and....well...no first amendment problems there...what you talking about the first amendment for? Why you use that headline? It's misleading!

I knew immediately why you used that headline and I am certain everyone else does too: not to mislead but to expose the double standard.
