Humanity's only factor that allows us to "bend" the rules of evolution (so to speak) is culture, in that for the most part cultural selection is more important that anything else when choosing a mate. As humans ( and previously Neanderthals, as has been mentioned) are the only animals on earth with culture of any sort, it might explain in part why creationists think we're special and exempt from the rules of nature.
