If you calculate , you will find out that in romania theer are 520 Orthodox monasteries and 495 in the rest of the world.
If from 495 we deduct 45 from Moldova )the second Romanian state) and add to 520, then the score is 452 + 565...

I would move to Southern Wisconsin. There is a mens and womans monastery and a couple more a little north. I hear Washington has some monasteries and is beautiful. Kansas has no monasteries even remotely close, and unless you live in the KC area, prepare to drive a long way.

God Bless :)

I like Washington, if you can handle the rain it's great. We're pretty close to and have a lot of ties with Alaska, which is of course where Orthodoxy first came to America. There are quite a few Orthodox Churches in the Seattle/Tacoma area representing a varity of jurisdictions.

There is no contest actually.
We do not know how accurate this compilation is or from what date.
The more the better whereever in world those monasteries would be..

that list can't be right at all. 53 monasteries in Greece is incredibly low and definitely wrong. But I see your 520 monasteries and raise you a Mt. Athos :p

(nah, I have no idea how many they are actually but its definitely a triple figure)

southern Wisconsin? the men's monastery in Harvard is small [4 people] and there aren't exactly a lot of churches in the rest of that region. you might as well live in Chicago - the north suburbs in particular. you'd still be an hour from both and you'd have all the Orthodox presence of Chicago.

as for where I'd say, I'm not sure, but looking at orthodoxyinamerica.org, there are a couple thick bands, one in west PA and on in east PA up to New York, I'd probably say a spot in there about an hour from a good monastery would work great.

I was surprized at the low number also. There are 20 on Athos alone, that would leave only 33 for the remainder of the country.

A way to check is to go to each country and click on how the monasteries are grouped . Then you get to each monastery with its name, location, if for men or women and date of foundation.
If you find one that is not listed: BINGO !

If a Michigander can chime in here.

If you come to our beautiful State (despite its fledgling economy) the southern part is great. If you were to move to the Jackson/Lansing/Battle Creek area you can find many Parishes (and even some missions) of all kinds of canonical jurisdictions and a WONDERFUL very active Romanian Monastery that is pretty well known called Rives junction (right next to Jackson) which is under the OCA (and yes, most of them know very good English there and they love having visitors as do most [all?] Orthdoox Monasteries). As far as parishes go, take your pick from a few OCA, an MP, a ROCOR (and a Mission too), Greek, Antiochian and I am sure I am missing some. You can have your pick from parishes that are quite ethnic (the ROCOR... mostly russians attend this one here, so it makes sense that it would be in mostly Slovanic), ethnic but still inviting (the Greek parish here... with an EXCELLENT priest who is a convert), a plyethnic/convert mix with Slavic customs (the MP parish and a couple OCA parishes that gave me this impression) and an all convert parish (the Antiochian one). They all have their wonderful strengths and I must say that I feel VERY blessed to be so close to all of it. Most areas of the country only have one mission at best and if your personality doesnt meshe well... that's how the cookie crumbles and you just gotta suck it up.

God bless!

John
PS: However, if you are looking for an Orthdoox-rish area do NOT live in the Northern part (nor in the Upper Penninsula) for there is, as far as I know, one Greek Church in Traverse City.

While I think that it is important that you live within driving distance of a parish you're comfortable with, I wonder about the necessity of being close to a monastery. I am not, in any way, speaking ill of monasticism, or questioning the need for monasteries, which I think is great. But as someone who has moved a lot, and have lived everywhere from so-rural-you-couldn't-hit-your-nearest-neighbor-with-a-cannon to so-urban-we've-got- bars-on-the-second-floor-windows and everywhere in between, while still being me and doing what I do in all of those places, I think maybe we overestimate the need to be close to things we don't often utilize.

For instance, my husband has always lived in cities and is put off by the idea of living in a place that doesn't have a lot of cultural attractions. But he's been to one art museum in the past year, one opera, and that's pretty much it. He could easily make two trips per year to the city even if he lived 500 miles away.

My point is, how frequently would you make use of a monastery? We used to live about 40 miles from one and made it out there about four times a year. For us, that's not enough to dictate where we live. Does that make sense?

i wouldn't let it dictate where i live per se... However, I would say that 40 miles is actually quite close... as opposed to 3-4 hours (or worse). 40 miles is really nothing at all even if you wanted to go once a month. Im not sure what she meant by "near" but if I said I were looking to be "near" a monastery... one an hour away would be a great blessing.

That was my point. We had a monastery in the next county and still only went four times a year. We could've done that if we were 3 hours away. My point was that living near a monastery is a lot like living near a pro sports team or an opera house or a great museum--it's nice to have it that close when you do decide to go, but you're probably not going to go often enough for it to be a strong factor in your relocation decisions.

Oh, I'm not the same way. I am a similar distance from my monastery. I can guarentee you I wouldn't (be able to) go nearly as much as I do if I lived three hours away. That's six hours on the road and that would take special planning. four times a year is really not that infrequent. Also, haven't you ever gone on a whim just cause it was a nice day? I have and do... This would definitely not be the case if I lived three hours away. I suppose it depends on one's personality.
