Take a few minutes to use the following scripture to look at yourself from the inside out. Only you and God are fully aware of what’s going on in your heart. If needed, God has the power to renew your heart. He will do this if you simply ask while sincerely trusting in his ability to transform you into a new creation.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 (NASB)
Once your heart has been touched by God, it is your responsibility to maintain the purity of your innermost being. Your thoughts, your actions, where you spend your time, and who you associate with, all have an influence on your heart.
“Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23 (NASB)
When we acknowledge our own inadequacy and concede our mind, will, and emotions to God, we are working from a pure heart. It is from this position that we come to know God intimately.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8 (NASB)
God can clearly see when we are simply going through the motions. God sees directly into our heart. Such was the case with the scribes and Pharisees who portrayed themselves as holy and undefiled on the outside; however, on the inside, they possessed empty and self-serving hearts.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” Matthew 23:27 (NASB)
A pure heart is characterized by the virtues of true wisdom.
“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.” James 3:17 (NASB)
Our salvation is the byproduct of these attributes which are amplified by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We trust Jesus from the inside out.
“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:38 (NASB)
Consider carefully the persona you present to the world, then close your eyes and look deep on the inside – that’s the view of you God is seeing right now.
