Understanding Trump

Here's a by-no-means-comprehensive list of things Trump doesn't care about:

1. You
2. The working-class
3. Mexico
4. Immigration
5. The national anthem, and who stands for it
6. Tax cuts/reform
7. Health care, "great" or otherwise
8. Veterans
9. America

Trump doesn't care. He doesn't care. To understand Trump, you only have to understand one thing: he cares about number one. That's it. Not any border wall. Not the "evangelical" "Christian" rubes he suckered. Not coal workers. Trump.

Expanding on that a bit, Trump has to win. All the time. For him to do that, you have to lose. There is no finding a way for both sides to benefit. There is no selflessness. Zero sum: he wins, you lose. That's it.

I'm amazed that some two years after he threw his size XXXXL hat into the ring, people still seem to not understand this. I honestly think it's less a lack of intellectual understanding, in most cases than outright denial. It's hard to fathom that a man who has never made any bones about what he is (a possibly-sociopathic narcissist), or what he believes (me first), or what he admires (himself) would be president. What does that say about the sickness that pervades this country?

Trump is a pouting 71 year spoiled brat baby. A "man" - or, as some like to call it, a manlet - who was never told no, and never suffered any consequences for his bad behavior. He's skated his entire life on daddy's money (which he's largely wasted going bankrupt every five minutes or so), his (phony) image as a good businessman, and PR. Even now, in the White House - undoubtedly one of the toughest and most isolated jobs in this country - he's surrounded by rear end-kissing sycophants who worshipfully sing his praises in cabinet meetings. Nobody tells the brat no, and so the brat continually misbehaves.

This recent episode with Kelly underscores this. Kelly is a man who undeniably spent a lifetime of service - both in the military and in government - serving his country. In that time he, unlike Trump, has earned credibility, respect, and admiration.

And yet when it came to Trump's disgraceful, dismissive treatment of a military widow - something even the widow herself verified - Trump sent Kelly out as a human shield to protect his hurt feelings. A coward who got deferments for "bone spurs" sent a dedicated military officer - a nearly unimpeachable voice in his largely discredited joke of an administration - to cover for him.

Trump may have gotten the heat off of himself - at least temporarily. But he degraded Kelly and Kelly's reputation in the process; just as a long list of other people and things that Trump has touched have been turned to excrement: Sean Spicer, James Comey, etc. This "president" uses people to inflate his ego and protect his delicate-as-glass feelings from any criticism, and then discards them, sans a soul or any credibility - when he's done with them.

We have to get over this mental block we seem to have where we can't admit Trump's awfulness to ourselves. It's like we're in national denial of how Trump is and how he always has been. We have to decide that our institutions, our national pride, our national reputation is more important than Trump's delicate little ego. He's not worth this degradation, this humiliation. Are we better than this?
