We serve God by being in service to others. To that end, the apostle Paul wrote in the book of 1 Corinthians about how he adapts to his audience in order to remove any obstacles that would get in their way of hearing the gospel message.
“For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more.” 1 Corinthians 9:19
When sharing the gospel with the Jews, Paul lived according to Jewish customs, not because he felt obligated to do so, but as a way to better relate to those under the law and to improve his chances of winning those souls to Christ.
“To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law.” 1 Corinthians 9:20
When approaching gentiles with the gospel message, Paul would put aside the Jewish customs and hold fast to the law of Christ.
“To those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law.” 1 Corinthians 9:21
Paul promoted considerate evangelism; one that accounts for social circumstance, ethnicity, and religious convictions. His method was to meet people where they are rather than standing over them as an authority figure.
“To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some.” 1 Corinthians 9:22
Our mission to spread the gospel message is dependent on our ability to shine our light in dark places. We need to carry God’s love with us wherever we go. We need to adapt like the apostle Paul and speak to people where they are as we demonstrate with our lives the teachings of Jesus. Winning souls is a rigorous task that takes self-discipline and perseverance, much like an athletic endeavor. The way to win is to stay focused and adapt to whatever circumstance we encounter.
“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.” 1 Corinthians 9:24
