Expository Study On Jude 22-23 By Seamusdelion

Bible Backgrounds Jude.png
Today I was studying Jude 22-23 because I always use that verse when others say I'm being to harsh and here is what I learned: there are 3 types of people in this verse, some older manuscripts only account for 2 but we will go with 3.

THE CONFUSED - ( have mercy on some who doubt)
these are the ones to have mercy on because they doubt the faith, due to false teachers confusing them about what is true and what is not. And this same thing happened in Corinth and Galatia, also in today's world. False preacher pray on such people because they are weak. We see in the prosperity gospel and word of Faith movement that there is a calling for sick people to donate money for healing. These people are desperate and would do anything for a chance at health. Others are poor and need money and these preachers tell them to sow seeds into their ministries and they will reap a harvest. This seed the bible talks about is the gospel, and the reaping harvest are saved sinners turning to Christ. Not money! Others use music to draw in the people to the "church" and once these people are committed they don't see the false messages that are being reached because these wolves are eating sheep's clothing and pretenders of love. Showing mercy however does not ignore the fact that these people are trained on false teachings. We shouldn't let them continue in this, but call them to repentance before they are seriously stuck in these false teachings, however to do it with meekness and love.

THE CONVINCED - (save others by snatching them out of the fire)
Here the challenge is increased for the evangelist and mercy is no longer to be regarded as a first step in trying to handle those who believe they are in the faith. We are called to snatch them out of the hell forever that awaits them at judgement for the heretical movements they belong to. We are to use humility and be willing to be used by God to "save others" though God is the ultimate source of salvation, he can equip us with the truth to do His work. (ie. Planting seeds, watering seeds) we are a secondary means he uses to reach sinners. In James 5 - we see that bringing a sinner from the error of his way covers a multitude of sin the word "snatching". Is Harpazō and this means seize or take someone by force Jude takes this from Amoz 4:11 "you were like a firebrand snatched from a blaze". Jude probably already new some who have been convicted of apostates and thus warned about what would eventually happen to these teachers. The only way we can help these people is to destroy their ideologies and false teachings with the power of God's word before it's too late. Jesus moulded this principle during His earthly ministry. To those who were confused, unsure, and filled with doubt, he was patient and gentle when presenting the Gospel. However to those who were committed to false teaching like scrubs and pharisees and followers of, be warned them severely about their lost condition.

THE COMMITTED - (and others have mercy with fear, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh)
We might have an opportunity to talk to the most committed apostates like Benny Hinn or TD Jake's. These people are so deceived and committed to their teachings in some cases are the authors of their heretical doctrines and leaders within the false systems. When approaching these people with the truth we must be very careful not to be sucked into their deception and proceed with the greatest of cautions. The admonition on some have mercy with fear indicates the sobering, frightening nature that outreach to some people entails. The word "fear" comes from the awareness that getting to close to these people (making friendships in the purpose that you can help them out of their apostasy) could result in you being tainted by their lies. The word "fear" phōbōs here is literally "Terror" - be afraid that you could fall into apostasy by association with these people. Jude used really graphic language to highlight the degree of danger in this type of outreach. The word garment "chitōn" refers to underwater. The word translated "polluted" is particularly from the verb spiloō and it means to stain or to spot to be polluted in the flesh means to be stained by bodily functions, literally to have crap thrown on you. Thus we should be very careful unless you would like to handle there crappy underwear and my physically defiled. When when trying to bring the gospel to these people, we must exercise extreme caution and wisdom.
