After a moment, Hillariah asked, "How did you do that? How do you, how are you speaking now?" She them remembered the very huge insects that apparently spoke. "Have you been with other people speaking like us?"
The giant percher explained, "I and others like me have our own way of speaking to each other. One among our kind discovered these little things, which appeared here, and had one in his ear. He told the rest of us it was a tiny creature that knew the meanings of all that other creatures would speak, from their minds, and would put those meanings into the mind of one giving it a place in their ear. A few others tried it, and confirmed that they understood other kinds of creatures communicating. You all came right this way. After waiting a little more, I decided to come here anyway, seeing you might not be dangerous. There were animals further on, which you all would have noticed, ɓut you did not go after them. So I trust you to provided you one of these, and so we might actual speak to one another understanding each other."
"This thing now in my ear is alive?"
"Yes. It is a small animal. It knows a lot still, including what minds are communicating in the way they have for that to others."
"And any other creatures are speaking to each other? With this little animal, I can understand any of those other creatures?"
"In the way I can, where creatures actually speak. I can't say I know all do. The few others that took one of these each have tried it, and have understood some other creatures, mostly some other kinds of birds."
"So I might find other birds around here and understand what they speak? And there are some other animals speaking that could be understood this way? Do those sheep that way speak? And there was a huge upright hairy creature. Do you know about creatures like that?"
"A few who went that far to the sheep that way did not hear any of them speaking. A few ùpright creatures rather like you but bigger and all hairy with longer arms and large hands and feet were seen, we call them bigwalkers, and they were heard speaking to each other. They spoke to one another about new places where they could make shelters."
"Then you came who could tell me, that others with me would know, would those bigwalkers be dangerous to us?"
