John and his two buddies, I see from time to time. John is on the Autistic Spectrum, which although it allows him to be better at some things than others, it has caused me some concern in our conversations. (I joke a lot where he works. It is when I drop in to see the other staff members. I only advise there on old personnel issues. I dont' really have anymore work there, but because it is a public place, occasionally I drop in to see staff, and sometimes talk.)
Knowing that it takes a long time for you to know a person is joking, is allowing me to handle every single one of our conversations, (He is really really nice too.), now, that I did not understand, before.
Well. I can tell some people are joking in person sometimes. Not always though. But that's only because I learned how to recognize it. What someone can realize naturally, I have to learn through trial and error. It's called being mind-blind, which means I can't really read body language. I can only memorize reactions to certain stimuli, etc, over the course of my life. So, because I've been exposed to people who joke around all the time, I can usually recognize it but only in instances that match my expectations. Every once in a while I might meet a person who jokes in a different way that isn't obvious. So then I have to relearn and then add that to my collection.
Not every autistic person is like that, though I know a majority of us prefer straightforward people and honesty. So while it may be obvious to some people you're joking, it's helpful if you say so for those of us who can't recognize it as easily. I'm not that bad in recognizing it, but I realize there are also people on the spectrum who do not have my unique perspective, and they may also take things very much more literally than I do. I can understand metaphors, for instance. Some people on the spectrum are more like Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy in that they can't recognize that kind of abstract language. It's a 'spectrum' for a reason.
I am rambling though. And this is a Starbucks thread, so I'll finish up this post and whatnot. If you wanna talk more about it you could always PM me I suppose.
It is the time, I take with him, to make sure he knows, that he knows precisely with me, what my intentions are, and were, in some to many conversations, that makes it work perfectly between us.
I prefer when people are up front and honest with me like this, because I know exactly where I stand in relation to them, and vice versa. It makes it so much easier and is actually a stress relief since we don't have to keep wondering.
John by the way was a school counselor in High School. He still works, he just doesn't get paid for it, and he has been donating his time for over 12 years. When he is at work, I cannot tell that he is not a paid employee. He is that dedicated and concentrating.
Maybe he has an intense interest or two that relates to his work. That might explain why he's that dedicated. But I don't know John, so I can't really say for sure. Maybe that job just makes complete sense to him so he's found his place in society, idk.
I'm still trying to figure things out for me.
Anyway. Back on topic. Yeah. Starbucks is about appealing to its consumers first and foremost. Of course commercialism has a huge part in it. The company wants to maximize profits, not religious or other ideologies.
