Chicago Police Release Footage of Laquan McDonald Shooting

Man with a knife walks past officers, not towards them, and one officer unloads his entire magazine into him (including multiple shots after McDonald was already on the ground), and begins to reload until another officer stops him. The officer involved has been charged with murder.

I just watched the video, and I'm saddened and disturbed by it. I can think of about ten different ways that "officer" could have handled it without shooting him.

There appeared to be at least 6 officers present at the time of the shooting, each of whom corroborated (or, at the very least, din't contradict) the false testimony given in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

Without the video, this would have been categorized as a "justifiable police shooting", and only the witnesses would know what truly happened.

Before the release of the footage, here's how this was being handled:

May 2015

"Chicago police officers deleted footage from a security camera at a Burger King restaurant located fewer than 100 yards from where 17-year old Laquan McDonald was shot and killed, according to a Chicago-area district manager for the food chain.
...
After the shooting, according to Jay Darshane, the District Manager for Burger King, four to five police officers wearing blue and white shirts entered the restaurant and asked to view the video and were given the password to the equipment. Three hours later they left, he said.

The next day, when an investigator from the Independent Police Review Authority asked to view the security footage, it was discovered that the 86 minutes of video was missing."

That's at least 4 officers right there involved in the cover up of the murder. They are not being prosecuted.

Here's how the story was originally reported back in December 2014:

"Chicago police shot and killed a 17-year-old boy on the Southwest Side after the teen refused to put down a knife, authorities said.

Police received a call of someone trying to break into cars near 40th and Karlov in Archer Heights around 9:45 p.m. Monday, according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

A squad car arrived on the scene, and officers spotted the teen -- later identified as Laquan McDonald -- standing next to a car with a knife in his hand, Camden said. The teen began walking toward Pulaski Road and ignored the officers' requests to drop the knife, Camden said.

"He's got a 100-yard stare. He's staring blankly," Camden said of the teen. "[He] walked up to a car and stabbed the tire of the car and kept walking."

Claim of self defense. They claimed the boy "lunged at police". Watch the video, and see just how disconnected from reality the police version of events is.

Murder with cover-up. At least 5 officers involved in the cover-up (in addition to the one being tried for murder). 1 ultimately being tried for murder after the cover-up was exposed. Partial justice, but certainly not full carriage of justice.

It shows a guy jogging/walking with police squad cars behind and around him, and then the guy getting shot multiple times, going to the ground, and being shot multiple times again.

While he clearly wasn't responding to the police requests to surrender, he also wasn't "lunging at them" (as alleged by police in the immediate aftermath of the incident) or any other threatening action.

Just heard on Public Radio that city of Chicago offered the the murdered boy's family a $5mil. settlement shortly after the incident, and that Emanuel fought hard to keep the video tape private.

I would agree if it is found that he had a part in a cover-up, but as yet there is no evidence, correct?

Besides, from what I understand this is a small problem compared to other things he has done. I understand he is not well liked....

Apparently five CPD officers entered a Burger King and erased their security video footage. Rahm also tried to suppress the video tape release. The city of Chicago also offered 5$mil to the family shortly after the shooting.

That is all hearsay until it comes out officially. Do you have any evidence linking Emanuel to any cover up?

Sounds like a good reason to fire the police chief....

9/11 happened under Bush's watch and he did nothing to prevent it. He stuck around for 2 full terms.

I am not defending Emanuel, but there has to be more than "it happened on his watch"

I wish he hadn't been stopped by his fellow police officer. I'm curious how many more magazines he would have emptied into the boys body.
