All the verses just tell us to be ready and we should be considering the Lord can come at any time. There is no trying to figure out the day of the Lord. Then please help me understand these verses:
Also though we will not be able to predict the exact time of His coming should we not at least be able discern signs of the times? They are drawing nearer and even as I said before the disciples then could ask and think about it. They must have thought about it like we do now.
You're not getting it, there is no way in our own finite way to find out when it is the day of the Lord. No where does the Lord tell us to look for signs, we don't even know if he is speaking OUR generation. We are acting like weird freaks who expect the end sometime "soon" when we don't know what that means. And I am not saying we are farther away obviously we are closer but what do we mean when we say the day of the Lord is "closer." Most dooms day people make it seem like its tomorrow or something when it can be a million years from now. Sure it's closer but it could still be a very long time. Its not cult-like behavior, imo. Its normal to be concerned especially the closer we draw to the end. We do draw near to the end, we cannot think we are somehow further away.
Matthew 16 1-3
The signs of His coming aren't easy to ignore.
what part mat 16-13 is talking about eschatology?
The Demand for a Sign
16:1 Now when the Pharisees 1 and Sadducees 2 came to test Jesus, 3 they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 4 16:2 He 5 said, “When evening comes you say, ‘It will be fair weather, because the sky is red,’ 16:3 and in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, because the sky is red and darkening.’ 6 You know how to judge correctly the appearance of the sky, 7 but you cannot evaluate the signs of the times. 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then 8 he left them and went away.
