So St. Silouan says this:

However, I’m wondering how one is to know the Zeitgeist of our times (or how one can reconcile what St. Silouan says here while still learning/knowing the Zeitgeist of our times?

tl;dr: What media/news is beneficial to know the zeitgeist of our times as one travels the path of Christ in the world?

St Silouan was a man who is one of the greatest ascetics and theologians of our time. his approach was so deep into prayer that news for him was a distraction. however, we must remember that he was a monastic who wasn't called to live in the world, and a lot of his thought comes from that line of thinking.

So, if I’m understanding this correctly... reading news isn’t something that’s bad for someone in the world, unless it distracts growth in prayer?

yep, remember monastics and a monastic calling is a unique calling, and not for everyone. so you gotta keep that in mind when you read monastic literature.

Further, the news cycle today is insane and shoukd be followed by no one. Consult your SF for help determining what's appropriate for you.
Will do, thanks!

Yeah, I just find that his wisdom is ideal and I’m trying to figure out how to navigate the world using that wisdom in a discerning way.

Again, you should seek qualified advice, but one interpretation might be "don't deviate from the path that's right for you just to follow an entertaining distraction."

Yeah, I’m trying to figure out that right path towards my hypostatic principle - it will take a talk with my spiritual father, for sure. Thanks again.

Current events are intense, I needed some counseling from our parish priests ( one is officially, but hardly, retired). The Lord tells us to be wise as serpents & harmless as doves and this is a delicate balance, I believe.
