  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Zechariah 12:10

So what does everyone think ?

Here is a verse from the KJV Old Testament..

Zechariah 12
10   And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Here is that same verse from the JPS (Jewish Publication Tanach)

Zechariah 12

10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto Me because they have thrust him through; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born.

Here is that same verse from the Artscroll Tanach

Zechariah 12

10 "They will look toward Me because of those whom they have stabbed; they will mourn over him as one mourns over an [only] child, and be embittered over him like the embitterment over a [deceased] firstborn."

And here it is from the CJB (Complete Jewish Bible)Zechariah 12

9-10 "When that day comes, I will seek to destroy all nations attacking Yerushalayim; and I will pour out on the house of David and on those living in Yerushalayim a spirit of grace and power; and they will look to me, whom they pierced. " They will mourn for him as one mourns for an only son; they will be in bitterness for a firstborn son."

Questions:

Now after reading those verses from different bibles what would you conclude ? Are these verses pointing to Yeshua as being pierced tying together his relation to God or are these verses saying something differently there seems to be a difference between "and they will look to me, whom they pierced" from the CJB and "and they shall look unto Me because they have thrust him through" from the JPS.

Does this verse identify God (the Me in the verse) with him who was pierced (Yeshua) . Would you say that this is a self identification of God that He and Jesus are the same, supporting the Christian doctrine of the divinity of Christ, and the doctrine of the trinity ?  Does God identify that He himself was pierced on the cross ?

Some would suggest in some Jewish translations, fully knowing this argument for the divinity of Christ, have changed the translation to make it so that God is not identified with Christ here. Do you think that's an accurate dipiction of Jewish translations ?

And lastly, What's your overall view point of these scriptures from any perspective using any one of the translations provided or your own ?

I think translations can be deceptive because the translator puts in what "they think the meaning is". While the orginal text says the same thing, they choose different words depending on the connotation they want to portray when translating.

That said I think when looking at the original Hebrew this either points Rabbi Yeshua of Nazareth as the Messiah or is just another one of hundreds if not thousands of incredible coincidences that added up fly in the face of all luck.
