I have not really followed the series much however I overheard something on the show that caused me IMMEDIATELY to stop my children from watching it. The main character has a best friend Joey. He was being "controlled"...ie POSSESSED by another person! The thing that clued me into was the fact that his voice had a evil voice over it. Imagine someone talking however a voice in the back that sounded deep, distorted, and demented. Honestly it really shocked me. I heard the voice and it almost gave me chills. I honestly feel that Yugioh can be a stepping stone to occult behavior. I sincerely believe that if children are playing with an older child that is into occult activity a younger child my just take it as "playing like they do on Yugioh". I can not express how disturbed I was to see a POSSESSED person on a cartoon. I strongly urge parents to watch the cartoons their kids do.

I don't like yugioh either and don't let my child watch it. There are a lot of cartoons these days that are more violent and have more witchcraft and sorcery in them. I have cable and will let my child watch the Disney channel and the Nick Jr shows. I do watch what my son watches because I am afraid of what he sees. Children are like little sponges and will imitate what they see. It's funny because I have been trying to get my son to say please and thank you and it wasn't until he watched a show called Rolie Polie Olie that he started saying it. I'm glad he says it now but it just goes to show you how important what they watch can be.

A lot of those type of cartoons have spititual overtones. I recently learned that that type of animation is called anime and it's from the orient and usually used to create porn. A neighbor caught her 12 year old on the internet (which he is not allowed to do without prior permission) looking at what looked like pokemon characters in the nude! Of course, just like with harry Potter and such, if you speak out against this stuff you get ridiculed, but I protect my kids from that madness.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this or not but I think it's important for this topic that concerned parents sit down with their kids and listen to the Real Player messages of Pastor Brown. Pastor Brown is a regular on our Christian radio station here in Wisconsin. I sat down with my 9 year old daughter who is heavily into these cartoons and playing cards and made her listen to these talk shows at the computer. My daughter wanted to get rid of her playing cards when she heard what these cartoons actually represent.

Hope I don't get in trouble for posting a link. If it doesn't work, email me for it.

My daughter is still young, but she loves Dora the Explorer (on Nick jr. or DVD at Wal Mart), which I would recommend for any parent with children 5 and under... Dora speaks spanish and english, and she and her little exploring friends go on adventures that require both languages. Cute, educational, and interactive.

Papist, my family didn't have a TV until I was about 12, and I think it amde me a more creative person than I would have been otherwise. But that's my own opinion. ;)

Although I wouldn't phrase it exactly as Neos did, I believe he has a point. I would think Yugioh (sp?) would have to be thoroughly examined before calling it "good" or "bad".

Also I don't think judging a program by its art style is fair. Sorry if this is a really poor analogy, but the Internet is a media full of pornography, but there are many good sites. ;-)

Personally, I find the shows annoying and pointless, but that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

So you believe children watching possessed people on a cartoon is fine? No it is NOT fine. We have to TAKE A STAND against things that are MORALLY wrong. I will not all my children to watch people that are possessed.

i think those shows can only be bad when watched by young children. but if you talk to your kids about all these issues yu-gi-oh talks about...you really shouldn't have a problem. but then again, each child is different, so you need to know what's right for you kid, and what's not.

as for me, i just watch the show for fun. i know better when i watch the show, so i don't find it harmful to me.

So if I talk to my kids about witchcraft it would be also fine for them for them to watch witchcraft? I'm not saying that Yugioh is witchcraft however you are saying that talking to them about it makes it ok for them to watch. Lets say Yugioh or some other cartoon had a homosexual character would it be ok for children to watch that. OF COURSE NOT. Simply talking and explaining it does not make it right for them to watch.

:wave Excuse me while I jump in here, but I wanted to add my 2 cents to the pot.

Yes, it doesn't make it right. However, I am a parent who believes our children are smart enough and have good moral background to know what's right from wrong when it is presented to them and talked about.
If these issues are not discussed with our children, they will find ways to get the info elsewhere. From friends, from internet, etc. (I do understand and agree though that the younger children need to have these descisions made for them until they are able to intelligently discuss issues with the parent).

I liked what one previous poster said, she talked about her and her daughter listening to a pastor on the Radio discuss what was wrong with these things, such as Yu-gi-oh. From there it seems her daughter made a concsious descision to get rid of her cards on her own. Not becuase she was told to. That shows a child/parent relationship that is based on moral respect and honesty. I can appreciate that. I never want to be a parent who takes things away or does not allow things for my child *Because I said so*.

So we can turn off the TV's, ignore the merchandise, but it doesn't make it go away, and at some point our children will face it. So why not talk about it? Plus, a great stimulating conversation with a child is better than any wated time on tv, anyday! ;)

I have talked with my children about what was wrong with Yugioh and why I no longer want them to watch the series or playing with the cards. My suggestion was never to simply take away the cards and stop them from watching "because I said so".

I can't stand it when Parents restrict there kids from watching harmless things, i'm 16 yrs old and my parents have always givin me free will and i don't abuse it....kids are not stupid, they know the difference between reality and fiction, this is the same as the dispute over harry potter, any thing with the word magic and you all go phsyco and immediatly judge it for something 'evil' or whatever, i'm a christian too but there is no way that i go around complaining about harmless things and try to take it away....yu-gi-oh is here to stay and there is nothing that is going to change that as long as i have my say in it!!!!!!!!!!

YUGIOH RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then we can agree on that. ;)

My *Because I said so* comment was not directed at you or any one parent, but just to that general way of thinking that seems to be evident in most parenting I see today. Merely my point of view.

If you really want to go into detail, the original poster said "mind control", which is technically different than being spiritually possessed by a supernatural force.

Who was possessing whom? Was it an evil character doing the possessing? That would actually portray it in a bad manner, and might even teach that it's wrong to control other's minds. We can't just see something dealing with the supernatural in a cartoon and automatically dismiss it as "wrong".
