  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Our oldest son is 7 & has a neighbor friend who keeps giving him Yu-Gi-Oh! cards as a gift. We really don't know much about them, but they don't look very "uplifting", if you know what I mean. I tried getting on "Focus on the Family"'s site to get more info, but didn't find any. Thought I'd try you all. Can someone fill us in on this? Thanks - Leigh Ann

Depends on what your view of fiction is. Our kids enjoy Yugi and his friends. The main characters strive to be loyal and honest and play fair. The game they play is just that, a game based on a fictional ancient game played by the Egyptians. We use this toon as a talking point, our kids like the game and the imagination behind it. But they know that it is not real and the things in it are fake and that people cannot "conjure" monsters (the back story from the ancient game). In the modern world of Yugi Moto the card game is played using computer/hologram technology and the card characters that are called are holographic pictures.
If you have personal convictions about the use of "magic and fantasy" in fictional stories, then this probably isn't a game you want your kid playing. It's great that you are involved with your son. Too many parents don't bother to check out what their kids are interested in.

Yugioh is a very violent show and the card game, like most of that nature, has to do with killing, monsters and curses.

Background story: Yugi Mutou is the main character of Yu-Gi-Oh! He completed the Millennium Puzzle, which unlocked a personality hidden deep within the puzzle. This personality comes out whenever Yugi needs to play a game. This "other" Yugi is called the "Dark Yugi". The Duel Monsters card game was invented by the character, Pegasus J. Crawford, who also stole the soul of Yugi's grandfather. Yugi travels to the Duelist Kingdom to retrieve his grandfather's soul.

"Dark Yugi" personality taking over Yugi could pretty much be called demon possession - given the all the occult references surrounding it. The notion that a child or anyone needs to be taken over by a dark force to complete a task - let alone play a game, is bad no matter how you try to defend it.

"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12

Of course YOU are the parent so it's up to you if you want your child to get into that. Just find out what you're getting your child into.

Long story arc--not complete but more accurate.

The "other" Yugi is not possessing the modern one. He is a different being. He is the pharoah from many years ago that was involved in the original dueling that saved the world from destruction by evil magicians that wanted to have supreme power. There has been no killing in Yu-gi-oh and the monsters and curses are not real. In the realm of this story, things that are not possible can occur. Yes, Yugi's grandfather's soul was stolen by Pegasus and put into a duel card to get Yugi to come to the Duelist Kingdom so that Pegasus could steal the puzzle from Yugi so that he could have more power. Yugi wins in the duels and not only frees his grandfather, but also saves a rival's brother, helps several other players, and gives the money from the competition to his best friend (who used to bully Yugi but Yugi wouldn't fight back because he doesn't condone that behavior--in fact Yugi comes to Joey's rescue even though Joey has been mean to him) to use for an operation to save Joey's sister's eyesight.
That's what I meant be how do you deal with fictional fantasy writing. This is made up. Many of the characters (the good guys) in Yu-gi-oh have better qualities than the characters in most fairy tales. They work for the common good and not for their own personal benefit.

Another note on the card game side of this--

My kids collect the cards and "duel" with them. It is very much a strategy game and takes a lot of forethought (like in chess) to be good at it. But on the whole it is no worse than Pokemon (altho the story line of the cartoon is marginally more interesting).

Yeah, what he said. ^ lol :)

My little one watches Yu-Gi-Oh, and to be honest, I don't find it any more violent than Elmer Fud shooting himself in the butt or trying to kiw da wabbit. lol It's all on perspective, and having control enough over my child that she doesn't think that it's cool to go around knocking people's blocks off.

I agree with most here. I think it's fine. My little girls watch it every now and them and I don't see a real problem with it. It's just fantasy, and as long as you're involved and are available to explain that to them, then I wouldn't worry too much. :)

Hehe...and oldrooster may just have something of a point... :D

What bothered me most about Yu-Gi-Oh were the ties to the occult (having been a person who was into that kind of thing before Christ) that I saw in some of the symbolism. I asked a friend of mine what she thought, just the other day, and she thinks some kids are 'deeper thinkers' than others. Some won't even notice or care about the stuff on the cards...others will draw a more emotional connection. I suppose it would depend on your child. I don't tell my kids they can't play with them...I just don't allow them in my house. We have also discussed some of my concerns about the cards so they are informed enough to decide what they want to waste their time and money on. I personally do not like yu-gi-oh. I think there are too many links to actual occult stuff and there is also a blur between right and wrong when it comes to the 'powers' being used.

Best advice I can offer you in making a decision, though, would be to Pray and ask God what he wants. Can't go wrong there!

My 6 1/2 yo daughter likes Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon. I discourage Yu-Gi-Oh because the only point to the storyline is going from one angry fight to the next. I prefer Pokemon because the characters are younger and they are making a life for themselves and learning how to live in a world w/ strange animals called Pokemon (short for Pocket Monster). Pokemon doesn't have the magic that you find in Yu-Gi-Oh either. Just my 2 cents.

Whatever you do, don't let him get obsessed with this... I work at a theatre, and tonight a new Yu-gi-oh! movie had it's debut... you wouldn't believe the crowds of kids coming to see this, it was so popular we were even giving the collecter's cards out at the box offices... I think some of these kids' obsessions are a bit unhealthy, so just be careful he doesn't get to that stage ;)
