Kate and I take out $500 per month and put it in a travel investment portfolio. We take the kids somewhere every two years. Last year was Greece. We just can’t narrow down this next year’s summer vacation....

Well my thread was about travel, not changing the world or opening orphanages! It was just a fun thread to find out where people are interested in traveling to in this world. I have some POWERFUL memories of being with my parents in China, Thailand, etc., and with Kate and I in the Philippines, and with she and the kids in Greece. I find travel enriching and meaningful.

Interesting. Did their work take them there or did they just want to live overseas?

They are close to Bath, but further out into the countryside. Beautiful area!

I didn't mean to put a damper on your thread. I do like the topic.

I'm not against travel. I have cool memories of visiting the Smoky Mountains - little Ozark towns during artisan festivals, taking a retreat alone in a picturesque mountain farm area as summer changed to fall. Driving in Texas Big Sky country while the bluebonnets were blooming. Amazing passes high up in Arizona or somewhere (the states blurred together lol). A magical ten days exploring the California coastline. Visits to castles and wineries.

Very little of my life has been spent traveling, but the richest memories are there. So yeah, I get what you mean.

I think it's very cool that you and your wife are able to do that. God willing, things may start looking up for me. And if so, I'm sure we will go somewhere, even if only to visit family or monasteries. (Only? That would actually be my highest priorities. )

Sometimes it's good to get away. Especially when for years we kept a farm and couldn't get away even for many hours to see family for holidays, and they were only 200 miles away.

Maybe some sour grapes on my part. Forgive me please?

Oh ... here's the reason I want to go to Vietnam btw ... by way of sweetening the apology.

Ain't it cool? (Yes, I just said "ain't" to a teacher lol)

My only concern about visiting the Middle East is the fact that it can turn cookoo there in a NY minute!
That's my concern with anywhere. Maybe not as fast as the Middle East. But Greece and Russia weren't exactly the places to be during the last century. Who knows what the next could hold, there or anywhere?

But having seen and heard so much from so many people from Greece, it's tempting to think about.

Jordan is pretty safe, by all accounts. We used to have Jordanians come to our liturgy and they said that King Abdullah was the real deal when it came to protecting religious minorities and at least attempting to foster a pluralistic society, which is a lot better than you'd get from basically anywhere in the MENA region, with the possible exception of Lebanon (which is itself also proof that you can have a truly pluralistic society that is still a powder keg, so...eh...). Also had a friend recently travel there on vacation with her husband -- I don't think either are religiously anything, and judging from their photos she was not pressured to cover up in any sense -- and she reported back that it was a really amazing, once in a life time kind of experience (granted, they did touristy stuff like going to Petra). I say go for it! Not everywhere is Saudi or modern Iraq and Syria.

My Aunt and Uncle are missionaries. They’ve been across Europe and are now in Israel. My cousin met her husband when he was visiting their missions organization there, and when they got married, they decided to go back to his hometown in the Uk especially since there was a school there that she wanted to attend. So...now they live there

I think I'd like to revisit Portugal.

My husband's great great great grandfather [ possibly a few more 'greats' in that list ] came from there. He was a servant to one of the English Surgeons in the Wellingtonian Campaign . His father had been a local Judge in one of the towns near the long border with Spain and some of the army had been quartered there. Eventually this young man came over to Scotland and settled here.

We visited the country a lot and I thoroughly enjoyed life there. It's still a very poor country but the people are kind and very tolerant , on the whole, of visitors.

You've been to China and Thailand and the Phillipines!. The truth is I've always wanted not only to travel to Asia but have an extended stay actually try to live in some of their cities including Vietnam. Japan would be cool but wouldn't be able to afford it.

I sure have! My folks took me to China (Beijing, Xian, Shanghai) and Hong Kong (British at the time) in 1999, Thailand in 1994. The Philippines I’ve been to three times or so because of Kate. Greece last summer.
