Luke 6:26 'Be merciful, just as your father is merciful'
or
Judges 19:29
When he had entered his house, he took a knife, and grasping his concubine he cut her into twelve pieces, limb by limb, and sent her throughout all the territory of Israel
One represents my theology in a phrase. The other represents the reason I don't generally try and proof text everything I do from the bible...
Exegeted.....I have one verse of the Bible which I meditate on a lot, to the extent that I think it has defined my faith, and indeed my whole theology. I am forever quoting it on this forum.I suspect that others may have their own favourites, and would be interested to know what these verses may be.
This might seem an odd verse, but here it is. The context is Moses asking to be shown God's glory
Exodus 33 v 19
Then He said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion"
When you place this statement alongside the character and example of Christ, you can see the fulfillment of Our Lord's claim that he and his Father are one and the same. It also reminds us that we cannot judge, because God's mercy is beyond our understanding.
So, any other verses? Thanks.
I agree completely. I've never fully understood what he meant, but to me it is saying that I never do what I want to do and I always do what I don't want to do.That is a very deep verse, and not the easiest in the world to understand. In fact, even after reading it three times I couldn't understand what the blessed Paul was rabbiting on about.
But I can see why it appeals.
30And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
sunlover, that's one of my favourites! the whole book of James is one of my favourite books.
1 John 4:15 - Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath for us. God is love, and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the Day of Judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world.
I know two people have already responded with this one (well, the Matthew version of the same saying anyway) but it bears repeating:
And {Jesus} answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
