• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Shoot the dictator?

If that doesn't work then shoot no one.

The dictator's smart enough not to be in the room.

As I said before, this is an old ethical scenario.

Either you act, and 1 person dies, and you are directly responsible,

Or you don't act, and 100 people die, and you are indirectly responsible.

Which is the more moral decision?

I refuse to play the dictator's game - he's an idiot and will shortly be overthrown by a more cunning dictator. Evil Overlords have better uses for children than for silly games.

Now I have one for you.

You're trapped in a labyrinth. There are three doors for you to pass through - each is guarded. One guard always lies, one always tells the truth, and one stabs people who ask tricky questions.

No. I call his bluff.

Then the dictator snaps his fingers, and a squad comes in and mows down all 100 kids with automatic weapons fire.

Important rule of poker -- don't call a bluff when you've got nothing, either.

Since suicide isn't an option...I'd ask the kids if one of them would like to be the 'sacrificial lamb'? If they don't understand my language (I am in a foreign country afterall...) then I would do nothing. There is no suffering in death...

What do ya think?

Hugs,

Such an insane scenario would only be concocted by someone with a sick sense of humor and equally sick mind. Call that bluff if you dare.
In that case I have no reason to believe anything the fellow says; there seems to be as good a chance as not that he's testing me and will in fact release everyone if I refuse to shoot a child.

To the OP: No time limit is mentioned. What is to prevent me from saying, "I changed my mind" whenever queried about my choice? How will the dictator know if I refuse to kill a child if I never say so?

I find the OP impossible simply because the author had to (admitedly) edit and re-edit the OP over and over again, and has to keep on clarifying the actual point.
Obviously, the OP is not very well thought out, therefore the is NO answer (much less "one answer")

This thread is a joke from post #1, as evidenced by EVERYTHING the OP author obviously did not think about.

There is no "correct" or "right" or "moral" answer.
If there were, the OP author would have attempted to trump everyone by now with the "correct" or "right" or "moral" answer.
The author of the OP has no answer based on the original OP.
Go figure.

You don't get to be dictator of a country by being gullible enough to be confounded by such a shallow ruse.

Meh..I see it as the dictator killed them, they would have died anyways and by not shooting anyone I'm not responsible.

Your inaction cost 99 children their lives -- I have a feeling their parents might see you as quite responsible.

For what purpose?
To explain the "right", "moral" or "correct" response.

Now granted, you did say that there is "a" right answer.
There is a right answer, and it's not suicide.
Which suggests you know what it is.
Without revealing what right answer there is, you seem to be holding it above our heads, just out of reach. Teasing us with "a" right answer you hold.

But by telling us, you reveal yourself, your morality, your ethics, etc.
So which is it going to be yguy?
Are you going to withhold "a" right answer?
Are you going to admit that many of the answers on this thread are all "a" right answer?
Or are you going to tell us what "a" right answer is?

Waiting, not holding my breath.
