I thought it might prove to be both informational and inspirational to share biblical types here. I always find praise welling in my heart when I see the truths of scripture illuminated in types.

A study of types solidifies our faith in the scriptures and leads to God's glory for only He could orchestrate such things by the Holy Spirit. Truly men were moved by the Holy Spirit when they penned the scriptures!

Start anywhere! Adam and Eve... Cain and Abel... the Flood... the Tabernacle... Mephibosheth... the meal offering... the feasts... Othniel... Joseph... Moses... Daniel... Jonah... Babel... any and all types!

:)

Note: This is probably of most interest to dispys in terms of types of the nation, but certainly we can all see types of Christ in the scriptures.

You can use "type" or "picture".

OK OK, I'll start with a quick couple of examples...

Adam and Eve

When they sinned, their first reaction was shame in their NAKEDNESS [a type of the sinner without the cloak of righteousness].

They then attempted to COVER THEMSELVES [a type of works gospel] with FIG LEAVES [possible type of the Law - the fig tree being associated with Israel]. The LEAVES were from the curse earth [another picture of men trying to bring the works of their own hands to God for salvation].

God PROVIDED for them [it was a free gift for which they did nothing nor paid nothing] COATS OF SKINS [blood was shed (Heb 9:22) because of their sin, and God did the killing].

The coats were GIVEN to them as a COVERING [a type of the covering of our sin by the sacrifice of Christ].

Get it? :)

Think of the OT as a picture book about Christ:

Luke 24
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

John 5
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Remember when Jesus referred to the "sign of Jonah"? Well that was a picture of His death, burial (3 days and 3 nights) and resurrection... let's stay on that and look a little further... after Jonah went through death, burial and resurrection he preached to whom? GENTILES! Jonah was also the only prophet from GALILEE!

There are pictures like this all through the OT! And pictures in the NT too!

:)

I don't get it. :liturgy: This is not an angel.
???
Rev 8:3-4 KJV
(3) And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
(4) And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
I think It's symbolic of prayers of the saints (the incense), being offered up by "angels".

Ok bleechers........You can slap me now since I messed up your thread.

No problem... there are types of "them" in the Bible too. To wit:

Cain and Abel

It is interesting that the book of Jude warns of those who are of "the way of Cain" so who are in this way?

Abel brought "a more execellent sacrifice than Cain". Why? Because he brought a blood sacrifice by faith [picturing the believer's faith in the blood sacrifice of the Lamb of God alone]. Cain "brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD" but was rejected [picturing those who try to come to God any other way apart from the blood of Christ - the "fruit of the ground" had been cursed by God].

1 John 3 concludes the picture: just as Abel hated Cain because Cain brought the blood sacrifice, so the world hates us. Cain was not a secularist, on the contrary, he was quite the religionist. As it has been since the time of Cain, the religious man who brings the fruit of his own labor to God hates him who brings only the blood of Christ. It galls him that we say his hard work is worthless to God.

I know a kind of funny "type". This is not my own but a friend of mine told me about it. There is some guy who wrote a book on types (my friend is on a missions trip right now.. when he get's back I'll get the name of the book and the author).. So anyway the author of this book is right into typifying every single thing that there is (a philosophy that I don't personally buy into but that's another story). Ok so anyway, you know the story of the servant who gets sent to get a bride for the dudes son right? Well at the end of the story as they are coming out of the city on the camels... right? Well this dude in the book, he thinks that those camels are a type of the modern day "bus ministry" (where you drive the buses around to the inner-city kids and bring them to church). Where he came up with this idea is beyond me...

I always thought that was kind of a funny story.

I believe the types only go so far too... I also think that the NT is the revealer of church truth and salvation truth, that all types should be obviously compatable with NT truth. I think my examples so far have been along these line... no "secret codes" or anything.

BUT :) speaking of the "unnamed servant" who was sent from Abraham to find a wife for Issac, we have a number of types!

Abraham [a type of the Father] sends an "annamed servant" [a type of the Holy Spirit] to find a bride for his son [Issac, being the son of promise, is a type of Christ].

The son was "sacrificed" and is now living and the unnnamed servant has been sent to find him a wife from among his relatives. When the servant finds Rebekkah, he never speaks of himself, he only brings glory to the son! She is wooed and agrees to unite to the "risen" son even thou she has never seen him.

There could be more said, but that should suffice. :)

 too cool for kisses

:holy:

A lot of cults are built around the parables and false types. I've heard a few "camel" stories myself. The anti-CCM folks like to trot out Hophni and Phineas offering a "strange fire unto the Lord" as being the equivalent of the backbeat...

The "strange fire" is a picture of those who are outwardly religious, but they do not come the way commanded by God (through Christ by faith). They are inwardly wicked and present their outward religion as their cloak of righteousness.

If the picture doesn't match up with revealed truth, then it should be tossed.

:help: beggin for mercy on the kisses!
