  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

 Hey guys! I'm bored and in the mood for a new WG topic, so...

Tell us a little bit about a character you've created of whom you're proud. What are they like and why do you like them? (You can describe more than one if you really can't resist. :p) As always, I'll be holding off on my reply until the thread takes off. It's just something I like to do...

I don't feel in the mood for discussing specific characters, but i'll give a few things I've used.

Incredible Power, Incredible Burden (whole save the world thing, or use the power for personal gain thing)

Werewolf/Amnesiac: genetic experimentation resulting in absolute memory loss.

Underdog: A kid takes on the world, basically because he's destined in prophecy to be great and can save everyone from ancient evil. But he's really outclassed, at first.

Amnesiacs in general: I'm a sucker for amnesiacs. It's fun to play someone who gradually recovers their memory over time. Then you can do the whole "flashback" scenario after someone says something that resembles one of the memories of the character's life.

A main character is being developed to be more on the anti-hero. He's a cynical individual that moves to serve his own interests while holding an utter contempt for authority and society in general.

Unfortunately, most of this driven by deep rooted issues stemming from past regrets, lack of self-confidence, and the overall perception that people think he's smarter than he really is.

My main character is a young woman who - though technically on the good side - has a warped sense of morals. Unfortunately, she sometimes does a better job of being evil than the villain.

She'd probably get along with my character - heck, she'd get a long with me now. ^_^

Navyguy, I share your fascination with amnesiacs. I have a whole novel worked out for one, but so far I haven't found the time to write it.

Also, I may be misremembering this big time, but didn't we do favorite characters not that long ago? I seem to remember writing that my all time favorite character starts the story dead and ends it in the same state.

Christianfantasy - I don't remember whether we did favorite characters before or not. Hm. If we have I can't remember. Which is entirely possible

Okay, I suppose I'll go now...one of my favorite characters I've ever created is a sixteen-year-old girl who is the victim of her father's sexual abuse. She wants to spare her younger sister this while she's still young enough to be untouched, but her younger sister, as it is, is blissfully ignorant and extremely unwilling to be helped. My MC is snappish, standoffish and stubborn, as well as extremely persistent.

I like her. :)

Mine would be

Kate for my short stories. She is a 13 year old girl who is involved in a car accident, which kills here father and makes here a paraplegic. She is very determined not to let this make here disabled, she is funny and always there for people.

In my novel it has to be

Mel (Melony) she is a girl which hides everything about her. She doesn't tell anyone that she was emotionally and sexually abuse when she was younger and also that now she has a eating disorder and is a cutter, I like her because she is similar to me. She is determined not to let this stuff destroy her and wants to overcome it all.

I'd have to say my favorite is now my MC. A young man thrusted into the mist of a world war on an alien planet who is wanted by all sides for the knowledge he (might) posses. He's not particularly brave, or confrontational. He can't fight, he can barely argue with anyone, at the start at least. All he wants to do is stay alive, keep his sister safe, not get involved in everyone elses business, and go home. He fails on all but the first of that list which ironically shapes him into a very diffrent person than what he started out as. I like him because he grows the most out of all my characters into someone who will fight for what is right and values all that is good.

Mine would be in my newest novel. Her name is Evangelin and she is 16. Basically she reflects all of my best qualities, and those that I wished I possessed.

However she is much more quick tongued and witty then I am, and it often gets her into sticky situations. She gets involved with a guy that goes to her school, and of course he is the popular football player. They have a decent thing going for a few weeks until he turns around and breaks her heart. Eventually she ends up falling to her "arch Enemy" for support because her life is falling to pieces(not just because of the break up)

She is beautiful, funny, smart, slightly crazy:p, incredibly fun, witty, and outspoken. She wear everything on her sleeve, and she's a blast to write

At the risk of sounding horribly silly out of the context of the novel:

The absolute favorite character of mine is actually a secondary character who speaks to me louder than my main characters. He is a very tall, very strong, very powerful demon who suppresses his demonic self to live in society with his human mother. He's awkward and funny and extremely protective of the my female lead.

For me, he is the most vivid character I've ever created.

I would have to say that my favorite MC so far in a book is my character based off of my D&D character - Saye Redraluin. She's a half-elf who's mother (a human) died when she was very young and her father vanished before she was even born.

She was sent to live with her uncle when she was 8 and ran away to a large sea port when she was 12 because she was being abused. She tried to make a living picking pockets and was fairly successful, until she tried to pick the pocket of Darren Rasharr, one of the most respected members of the theives guild.
He felt sorry for her and took her under his wing. She becomes a great thief, probably a little do great for her own good. She ends up stealing an artifact that belongs to one of the two main religions of her world. This wouldn't have been a problem, except that her no good father had made a really big mistake and owed this particular god a few favors. Since he skipped town it's now her job to pay up.

She's a pretty irascible sort of person, she has a very short temper and she can be rather snarky with people. She loves children though and she has an extreme devotion and love for Darren, despite the large age gap.

She's really fun to write, because she often gets stuck in internal dialogue that is more than a bit caustic; she usually abuses those she doesn't like in her head instead of out loud, though it's not unknown for her to throw an acerbic remark when necessary. She has a horrible habit of flirting with anyone and everyone, regardless of gender.
