Nathan Blanc is a 20 year old Israeli man who has refused to join the Israeli Defence Forces, a job that would in great likelihood require him to be part of the occupying force in the West Bank or enforcing the embargo of Gaza. Having spent some time in the West Bank and seeing how the IDF treats the Palestinian people, I can understand why he would want no part of it.

My prayers are with him. He is facing 6 months in jail for his refusal to serve. I pray that if it is God's will he is released, but if not that he is provided strength for fortitude during his time behind bars for doing the right thing.

May God bless him.

Refusing to serve in the military is a crime in many countries, not just Israel. Even in countries which have no active conflicts of any sort....
I realize that, and I would support anyone who refused to disobey Jesus and pick up a gun to use against other human beings. In my city, I've given support and organised petitions against deportations of Russian and American war resisters also.

He could always have joined and tried to make things better for the Palestinians in areas to which he was seconded.

Its tough being in the IDF, and sometimes some soldiers go overboard in the things they do...but most of my friends have served and got through it all ok, even when they had to do some unpleasant duties in the name of security.

I don't see the Israeli Army as an occupying force in Judea and Samaria, rather they are there as a peace-keeping role...and I thoroughly agree with the continued blockade of Gaza, which is purely to stop clandestine weapon shipments, all other things can be docked, checked and let through, but the press likes to give the idea of a people under siege just for the sheer hell of it.

I guess its all a matter of opinion: I am pretty neutral on this specific subject.

I think compulsory military service would suck because I wouldn't have much to fight for but if its the law of the land you sort of just have to deal with it.

I have seen 'your friends' at work in Hebron. I have seen some examples of soldiers greeting Palestinians with "salaam alaikum" and helping treat a Palestinian who was in a fight with another Palestinian.

I have seen other soldiers throw sound bombs at peaceful demonstrators, harrassing and pushing around kids who were school-aged, pushing around elderly shopkeepers, brutally assaulting and arresting people who were not attacking them, and escorting a group of settlers after they beat up an elderly man on his own property, pointing their guns at and threatening his family. I've also seen them do nothing as settlers were invading Palestinian farmland and throwing rocks at their cattle, but instead pointed their guns at us and swore at us for "interfering".

You have a very interesting definition of "peace keeping". I saw the soldiers making the lives of Palestinians a nightmare and making sure the settlers could peacefully attack them. When I was there I spoke to one of the soldiers in uniform who told me he hated his job and wished he didn't have to protect the settlers, and that he wished he was in Israel.

That's about how I feel. I wouldn't want it here but it is the way it works in Israel and I understand that.

Just for duscussion- a lot of people dispute Rav Weiss' spin on things, mainly because Islam has changed so much since the days of peaceful co-existence with Jews. Blame Wahabism, or politics or whatever, but whole segments of Islam have become agressive and imperialist now and when not fighting each other they turn on their non-Muslim neighbours. Personally, I like the sentiments of Rav Weiss. The Torah is more important than Zionism, but I would never live in a Muslim country, because it's just not safe for Jews.

Not everyone who joins the IDF is sent into combat. There are many many non-combat roles. And if the Palestinians would quit using terrorism and violence, there would be much less need for the IDF.

Having spent a good amount of time in Israel and having been in Gaza and the West Bank, I see how the Palestinians treat the Israelis. And it's not very nice.

In the case of Palestine, why not blame Mossad? They are the ones who funded HAMAS in order to have a competitor to the PLO. They created their own Frankenstein.

Funny that no matter what happens, Jews, The West and Christians always are "wrong" and get the blame for every Middle eastern failure. If the power goes off in Tehran, it's a Zionist plot. If Hamas kill their own people, blame Mossad.

Defies logic.

Sorry, but my statement that Mossad was behind HAMAS was not a paranoid conspiracy theory. According to Zeev Sternell, historian at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, “Israel thought that it was a smart ploy to push the Islamists against the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO)”. Ahmed Yassin, the spiritual leader of the Islamist movement in Palestine, returning from Cairo in the seventies, established an Islamic charity association. Prime Minister Golda Meir, saw this as a an opportunity to counterbalance the rise of Arafat’s Fatah movement. According to the Israeli weekly Koteret Rashit (October 1987), “The Islamic associations as well as the university had been supported and encouraged by the Israeli military authority” in charge of the (civilian) administration of the West Bank and Gaza.

Hey not all of us Muslims blame everything on the west and Jewish people. Muslims are definitely at fault! It's like how I keep hearing many blacks in America blaming white people for failures by blacks.
Scapegoating is human nature I suppose , very few people will actually look in the mirror instead of constantly blaming others.

This Palestine and Israel issue , I can not take one side on.
