That's the mantra from Klaus schwab and WEF , and all to be achieved by 2030.
So let's see how their going so far.

How is your CD collection going?...ANSWER: - Oh I don't own CDs anymore , I get all my music on line , Spotify etc.
How is your DVD collection going ?..ANSWER - Oh I don't own DVDs anymore , I get all my movies online.
How is your book library going?....ANSWER - Oh I don't own books anymore , I do all my reading online , Kindle etc.

Eating bugs three meals a day. Living in a cube. Forced to marry someone who you can't tell if they're a man or a woman. Ah what treasures the future holds.

Personally I like being able to listen to any song, watch any movie, and read any book anywhere at any time with a device I always have with me, that also does a bunch of other stuff. There's plenty more to own than entertainment media. Like my prize collection of toenail clippers for instance.

No it's not and no it wont.

That phrase comes from a 2016 video of potential scenarios by 2030, made by a Danish politician. The video is still up on Facebook. It is titled 'You'll own nothing, and you'll be happy. This is how our world could change by 2030.'

Notice the operative word in the second sentence: "could".

Nothing in the WEF's stated goals include ending private ownership of property. Neither the WEF, nor Klaus Schwab, have that as a mantra.

I still have all of those PLUS streaming services. My library is expanding, to the point where I need to buy more bookshelves.

If people got rid of their physical/digital media, that's on THEM. It has nothing to do with the WEF.

Yeah, streaming services and always available WiFi/4G or 5G connectivity are great. I can find music for a class I'm teaching, or play videos for my kids, or track down some obscure snippet from a 1980 cartoon with speed and ease. I don't need to lug around a CD case, or spend 1/2 a day digging through crates and stacks at a second hand music or bookshop to get what I need.

Its CONSUMER PREFERENCE, not the WEF or any other organisation, that is driving the change. The main problem now will be to avoid/delay the 'ensh**tyfication' of the technology to prevent the service providers squeezing more money out of us while worsening the product (looking at you Youtube and Adobe).

How is your CD collection going?

I appreciate the quality and portability digital music provides but I haven't abandoned physical products. I'm getting a phonograph for nostalgia's sake and as a decorative piece. And there's a large collection for classical music that piqued my interest. That's the one category along with opera I'm willing to invest in.

How is your DVD collection going?

There's very little I enjoy that I need to own on DVD. I prefer to watch movies at home. The seating's better and the food is healthier.

How is your book library going?

I downsized my collection a couple of years ago and I'm going through it again this summer. I purchase a lot of digital books and physical copies of select titles that I need to have on my shelves. That's my perspective now. Must have titles on the shelves and the remainder as eBooks. That doesn't prevent me from securing a digital copy too. I don't want a bunch of books I'll never read or others I won't return to. It has to be a topic I'll address frequently or revisit more than once.

As for Klaus, I view the statement differently from most. He wasn't joking. I've seen enough behind the scenes that confirms their intentions. But I didn't panic. I prioritized ownership in the most important areas and put plans in place to address the rest.

And I've reached the point of oh well. It's not that I don't care but I'm not bothered anymore. You can only do what people permit. No amount of upset will mobilize anyone until they're ready to take action. I used to share information and give warnings but I stopped. If you want to sit on your hands that's your prerogative. If you want to stick your head in the sand you're welcome to do so. If you want to fill your house with smart gadgets have at it. But don't complain later on when the consequences rear their head.
