Ok.
These are not specific sensitivities, friend. I'm not trying to make a case that you shouldn't speak because one of the words you may use could happen to be a specific trigger for someone---because, in that right, it is impossible not to upset someone inadvertently. No one knows of such specific sensitivities for each individual. Choosing not to make joke of clinical words, diagnosis, is not catering to some five or six people who happen to be 'specific' to that thing---seriously, it's not that unique. You're not guessing birthmarks under clothing, you're understanding that using words that actually have definition meaning is not isolated to a single or few people.
No ones trying to ban conversation or words for mental illness.
Ooooh, ouch, nope "words only hurt if you allow them to." Fallacy alert.
I would say that a whole lot of marginalized people have gotten words spat at them, and it had nothing to do with them "allowing" the word to be harmful. It's not mentality of the person at the receiving end that makes oppressive language powerful, in it's cute n' easy institutionalized way. I'm not even saying that anyone on this thread has ever been discriminated against or oppressed, but the fact that you made that regurgitated statement just tempted me to say something (because, btw, same statement has been applied to racial, gender, and other identity-related issues) Please don't tell me that the "N" word and the "F" word have no power.^
It seems to me that you are speaking from an entirely different context then I am.
I'm talking about casual, harmless conversation and speech meant for comedy / satire.
I'm not talking about deliberatly insulting people and using specific words with the intent to pile on the insults and actually hurt people.
It literally just means to be treated badly by people who are acting on prejudice. I'm responding to the comment you made (and I paraphrase) that because a christian (with mental illness) may have said some nasty and hurtful things to another person regarding religion & the afterlife, that they are in no position to "complain" about someone making their mental illness into a joke
That's not what I said.
I was talking about sane, healthy christians who are convinced that I will go to hell and are of the opinion that I deserve to go there.
And I didn't say that I can then turn it around and insult them back.
. I am saying that despite how someone acts, they can still be treated badly by others and their being treated badly shouldn't simply be because you think it's some-of-their-own-medicine. I am saying that should someone be discriminated for their mental illness, it's a bit nauseating to have someone show up saying "the bully can't be bullied". Like, that's a nice ideal. Some nice idealized preschool karma right there.
Once more, at no point have I defended the discrimination of anyone.
The thread isn't about discrimination. The thread is about harmless day-to-day conversation using vocabulary that the OP doesn't like.
You're over there saying that you can use whatever language you want, and then you complain that the people who would feel hurt by such language are saying that they are feeling hurt....
That's not at all what I'm saying.
I CAN use whatever language I want.
Others CAN feel hurt by whatever language I choose to use.
Just like I CAN feel hurt by whatever others are saying.
What neither can do imo, is tell the other party that he needs to shut up.
Unless it is indeed a case of deliberate insult, deliberate discrimination. But that is not what this thread is about.
This thread is about harmless day-to-day conversation with no ill intent.
This thread is about, for example, a schizofrenic feeling hurt when I tell my non-schizofrenic friend "you're crazy, dude!" when he says something I consider crazy.
Again, this thread is not about deliberatly insulting people using words tailored specifically to their persona to pile on the insults and the hurt.
There is a clear difference between both.
