• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I wanted to ask has anyone here done or do yoga, Qi Gong and/or Martial Arts? If so do you have any resources for learning more about it and your own experiences? I'm not sure how these fit into the Christian Faith and what Christianity thinks of yoga, qi gong or martial arts though.

I'm a big fan of Judo

Judo know what will happen if you come at me bro

seriously though ?

One of the healthiest senior citizens I know does a little yoga / stretching every morning, he's a 65 year old boxing coach as well, but diet is important along with those things

I hear lots of " yoga = satanism " or some new age something or other " kundalini serpent chakra = satan " or stuff like that

I wonder though, if God created man to work the field, would he expect man to just get up and start doing farm work with no stretching first ?

seems unlikely

Done martial arts for years, did yoga many times, and as for qi gong... never done it but I have read medical research that indicates it helps with anxiety and depression.

I've studied martial arts for about 10 years. Mostly, it's good exercise (develops strength and flexibility), and it's good for developing mental focus and emotional strength.

Interestingly, I've found my experience of martial arts to be, spiritually, a lot like my experience of meditation. Except with more pushups. :) It's an experience of letting go of all the distractions and worries that fly through my head, and focusing just on what's in front of me for an hour. Very centering, very calming, in its own way.

Two areas that might concern Christians are: 1) As Christians we are called to love our enemies, so a Christian martial arts practitioner should think carefully about whether, and to what degree, violent self-defense is consistent with loving the enemy you are defending against. 2) There are elements of non-Christian philosophies woven into the Asian martial arts. As with anything, think critically, adopt what you find to be good and true in these philosophies, and set aside what you find to be untrue.

I'm currently reading Meditation and the Martial Arts, by Michael Raposa. I'm enjoying it so far, though I'm only a few chapters into it.

I've done tai-chi and gi-gong I found it very helpful with stress and fatigue. I only stopped doing it because of gall bladder surgury many years ago, but now that I have rheumatoid arthritis its recommended I take tai-chi and gi-gong so I might get back into it.

Yoga has been fantastically beneficial to my life physically, mentally, and spiritually. It's dramatically increased my flexibility over the years. It helps me to alleviate tension and stress. I find it to be meditative and a lovely time to pray. My hometown church actually has weekly yoga classes.

I'm going to South Africa very soon, and have already sorted out where I'm going to go to do yoga during the layover. It's always been especially helpful to me when traveling. :)

One of these days I'm going to do learn tai-chi.
