  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Those are great Joykins. :) Thanks for sharing. The little sweater is so cute...as is the little one in the blue hat. That last hat looks like a lot of work.

Thanks. That's my little girl modeling her cousin's hat. :) She is 3 now, they grow so fast.

Being left-handed shouldn't keep anyone from knitting...there are methods for holding the yarn in either hand. It is possible to teach yourself to knit but a lot of yarn shops and recreation depts offer classes.

My mom has a serious addiction to Hobby Lobby. :o ^_^ She's like a kid in a candy store when you even SAY the name...Hobby Lobby. :p It's a blast to go shopping with her there cause she's just so excited about everything.

One of my favorite things about Hobby Lobby - they're closed on Sundays.

Not sure if this is true at all their stores, but our local store has a sign reading that they're closed so that their employees are able to worship with their families.:clap:

Oh and I knit too.

One of the docs at my office is a really big knitter. She's taught a lot of the staff how to knit - me included. I've knit lots of scarves, shawls, some sweaters (mostly for kids - but not exclusively).

I've just started a sweater for myself - based on Elizabeth Zimmerman's seamless sweater (actually all my sweaters have been based on her seamless plan) - in a silk blend. The colors are beautiful - the yarn is called "water lilies" and it's easy to see why - looks like a Monet painting.

Anyhow - when I finish it I'll post a picture.

Thanks for sharing those links. I enjoy looking through knitting and crocheting blogs to see what others are doing. It's so neat to see so many people enjoying these crafts.

Aren't the choices for yarns amazing these days? I look forward to seeing your finished project. Do you have pictures of other sweaters you've made?

Hmm...not sure if this is 'conservative' enough or not ;) :p but...

Who all of you is into knitting, crocheting or any other type of yarn craft? How long have you been at it? What do you like to make? Are you obsessed? And if so do you have any pictures to show off? :D

I crochet. I've been crocheting for about 5 years now. I am currently making an afgan for my boyfriend's neice. I've made other afghans, scarves, mittens, and hats in the past.

I've been known to Naalbind. I made a hat, but didn't realize that wool really shrinks when it felts, so now it's a baby hat.

Naalbinding was the precursor to knitting, practiced widely by the Vikings and up to the...14th century or so, though there is at least one example (the Asle mitten) from the 16th century.

I've also been known to spin on a drop spindle.

I have a couple of baby sweaters I'm finishing - I'll take pics of them. Until I saw Becky posting pictures on her blog I never thought about taking pictures of anything I've done. But now that I have a digital camera I can change that.

And yes, yarns are amazing today - so much better than they were 20-30 years ago. I love to just run my hands over all the various yarns at the stores. We're lucky to have several nice yarn shops in the greater Toledo area - I could spend hours just looking.

I've never heard of "Naalbind" before. I think it is wonderful that you keep some of the older traditions alive.

Yeah it's not exactly common. I have yet to find, "I Can't Believe I'm Naalbinding!" on the shelf at a craft store. It's pretty simple, really. Where, in knitting and crocheting, you're looping loops through each other, with Naalbinding, you pull the entire (short) length of yarn through each stitch, essentially tying it in loose knots. Then you splice on more yarn a few yards at a time. I like it because it's pretty intuitive. If I had sat down for a few weeks or so and decided, "By golly, I'm cold and awkwardly shaped. I have lots of yarn but no fabric! I think I'm going to find a way to create custom-shaped, stretchy and very warm fabric garments out of my yarn," naalbinding is pretty close to what I would have come up with.

This site has some good pictures of projects and links to "how-to's" if you're curious.

/end shameless proselytizing.

Afghans are pretty much my favorite thing to make. I'd love to see pics if you have any.

Gem (6 yo) is just learning how to do loopyarn weaving (like making potholders). I have two small looms for making trim, and have done some card weaving. I have a drop spindle and cards for carding wool, but I can't do it consistently.

My love is embroidery. My mom did quilting, and tried to teach me knitting, but it never stuck. I'm thinking of trying it again, because my eyes are getting older and those cross-stitch patterns are harder and harder to read.
