Our land is ready for planting and the seedlings are started and we are just waiting on a chicken wire fence to go it.

So when I saw this, it was interesting:

This made sense in the article:

Top it off that my extended family members spend a bunch on riding mowers and weed killers, and lawn fertilizer. It makes more sense to grow food.

We have the garden but also some lawn and fruit trees.

Lawn is good for children to play games on but you do need to set aside some of your plot for growing other things esp food. If you dont have good soil try container plants or raised beds.

A vege plot can become very intensive though and many ppl dont want to water it its a lot of work. Mowing the lawn is relatively easy, now with petrol mowers but i personally dont like it, noisy and waste of gas. I dont know if people still use push mowers ive never seen them.

Suggest to your family that they grow a few fruit trees that are easy care. Not sure what will grow in your area it depends on the climate.

I couldnt grow a fungus

I planted four fruit trees on this horrible clay soil we have in SC (which could supposedly grow most everywhere) and I have dead sticks coming out of the ground

Plant grapes as they like poor soil.

D'oh.
You also need to add lots of manure for fruit trees and make compost but for grapes not really necessary. Strawberries are good in pots...
