  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

riven0 challenged some of us (well, me, at least) to read Harun Yahya's supposedly devastating refutations of evolution. The links were a bit overwhelming but I found one that's not too hard to navigate and doesn't demand any money of me: http://www.evolutiondeceit.com/index.php

On the "THE AUTHOR" page, we find that his real name, apparently, is Adnan Oktar. "Harun Yahya", it says, is "formed from the names “Harun” (Aaron) and “Yahya” (John) in the esteemed memory of the two Prophets who struggled against infidelity". Well, at least he's admitting that he has a religious bias.

That page also lists a large number of books supposedly by the same author, books about Islamic creationism as well as more straightforwardly religious Islamic topics. Strangely, one of his books is not listed with those: Holocaust Deception: An Islamic History of the Nazi-Zionist Nexus -- http://www.noontidepress.com/catalog/0247.html ...but we'll let someone else deal with this fellow's Holocaust denial. Here, let us be content for now to look at his evolution denial.

I'm going to go through the online book, chapter by chapter (no, relax: I don't mean that I'm going to quote the whole book here, although I will do some summarizing), and I'm going to post my comments as I go.

To start with, the first two chapters only (it's late).

The first chapter, "INTRODUCTION: WHY THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION?", can be dismissed rather quickly. It's merely a rant against materialism, blaming materialism for everything from communism to fascism and even, strangely, religious terrorists. Even if we could blame Darwinism and materialism for bringing misery and death to the world, I don't see that that would say anything at all about the validity or truth of evolution (just as my mentioning that the author of this work also wrote a book denying the holocaust may not necessarily mean that he's got no valid arguments against evolution).

The second chapter, "TO BE FREED FROM PREJUDICE", rehashes argument from design. If we found three bricks on top of each other, would we "suppose that these bricks had come together by chance and then climbed up on top of each other, again by chance"? He is saying that we are prejudiced against a divine explanation and so we stubbornly cling to evolution.

He also states that there are two possible views, God created complex living things as they are or that "that life was formed by unconscious, random coincidences. The latter is the claim of the theory of evolution." He has an inset photo of Michael Behe, whose "irreducible complexity" has been soundly debunked elsewhere (if that needs to be discussed, I suggest that someone should start a new thread for it).

He promises to demonstrate in future chapterse that "there is no chance whatsoever that a single living cell-or even one of the millions of proteins present in this cell-could have come into existence by chance as the evolutionists claim". He declares that he will demonstrate through probabilisitic calculations that there is a 0% chance that "the evolutionist view on the emergence of living beings" is true and that, therefore, his creationist view has a 100% chance of being true.

One is tempted to shout "false dilemma!" but let's carry on.

In other words, because he believes that it is absolutely impossible for abiogenesis to have occurred, he concludes that it is a proven fact that God exists. Wait! I thought he was talking about evolution but, so far, he's talked only about materialism and abiogenesis. I guess he's not especially worried about getting his scientific terms straight. After all, his primary concern appears to be not with science but with "the struggle against infidelity".

In the next section of the chapter, "Blind Materialism", he again cites evolution as the basis of materialism. He gives us a short quote from a Turkist scientist in which that scientist appears to prefer an event with a probability of zero than to accept divine intervention as an explanation. There is a footnote. If one someone here wants to go check it out and read, probably in Turkish, the original document, we might be able to get the whole context. ;) I'm sure we're all sufficiently familiar with creationist tactics to not trust short quotes that appear to show "evolutionists" being foolish or dishonest.

He also quotes Behe, and goes on to claim that scientists stubbornly cling to evolution and materialism even though "All the scientific research carried out by these people demonstrates to them the existence of a Creator."

He's made many claims. He promises to, in the rest of the book review the scientific findings that disprove evolution. He promises that we will "witness that evolution theory is in fact a deceit-a deceit that is belied by science at every step but is upheld to veil the fact of creation."

How exciting! ...now, I must get some sleep.

Welcome to "Islamic" YEC. If you haven't noticed yet, Yahya is simply a rehashing of AiG and ICR. As you noted, it isn't about discussing science but rather about fighting the atheism vs theism fight with evolution being atheism and YEC being theism.

Now, as you go thru the rest of the book, let me suggest you consider a hypothesis:

Yahya is a fifth column for Christiant fundamentalists to undermine Islam. Notice that Yahya's audience is ONLY in Turkey and the West. The Islamic countries have rejected it. Yahya in the 1990s (before his arrest on kidnapping, extortion, and a host of other charges) had a steady stream of YECers coming to Turkey: Morris, Gish, Ham, etc. So see if Yahya is not really pushing a Christian agenda in the book instead of being Islamic.

Oh, yeah. I don't expect anything novel or especially challenging. In the first two chapters, all he's doing is making assertions.

Yahya is a fifth column for Christiant fundamentalists to undermine Islam.
I have no objection tion the undermining of Islam. Unfortunately, Christianity wouldn't be much of an improvement.

So see if Yahya is not really pushing a Christian agenda in the book instead of being Islamic.
I'll keep it in mind but it's not much of a priority for me. It's possible that he could be up to something that underhanded, though, considering that he's already embraced evolution denial and holocaust denial.

Chapter three: "A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE THEORY".

The opening paragraphs declare that evolution is all about denial of God and that its roots are in ancient paganism. He produces a number of quotes supporting his opinion that one must have faith in order to do good science. *yawn*

In the section called "Darwin’s Imagination", Yahya is telling us that Darwin didn't know what he was talking about and that he just made it all up.

Next, he dips even deeper into ad hominem, calling Darwin a racist. I don't know if Darwin was a racist and I don't care. It's completely irrelevant to the question of whether or not evolution is true! How many more logical fallacies is Yahya going to commit? He mentions "social darwinism", of course, which has nothing to do with evolution and natural selection.

The science of genetics should have destroyed Darwinism, he says, but a few God-hating scientists got together and "agreed on ways to "patch up" Darwinism." It strikes me as strange that he thinks there is something wrong with revising a theory so that it accounts for the facts adequately.

Okay, this is hilarious: he claims that no transitional forms have ever been found anywhere. :D He also pulls out the old lie about evolution being in crisis...

This chapter is a complete waste of time. He says nothing meaningful. As in the previous chapters, he is merely making pronouncements about how evil and stupid evolution supposedly is.

In one way, Creationism can undermine a religion because you are linking the validity of that religion to something that can and Has been falsified.

However, in this case, I believe He is trying to use creationism to undermine islam by getting people to agree with him, and then trying to push them towards jesus and christianity.

Basically a Hook tactic. Get them hooked them reel them in and lead them to what you want (away from islam).

So far, the book is very disappointing. The first three chapters are long on assertions but rather short on facts and valid arguments.

On to chapter four: "IMAGINARY MECHANISMS OF EVOLUTION".

Oh boy, he's going to explain how natural selection and mutation do absolutely nothing to change one species into another! Hey, that sounds like fun.

"Natural Selection" Yahya assures us that natural selection exists but that it has nothing to do with evolution: "For example, in a deer herd under the threat of wild animals, naturally those that can run faster will survive. That is true. But no matter how long this process goes on, it will not transform those deer into another living species. The deer will always remain deer." Gee, Yahya, don't you suppose that an accumulation of small changes over a very long period of time will alter a population to such an extent that it becomes a species distinct from the original population? No, I guess you don't.

He complains about the white and black moth thing -- no new forms were produced, you see. Golly, Yahya, I did not know that! How shocking! (Don't let the sarcasm drip onto your shoes.)

He complains that natural selection cannot introduce new genetic information into a species. Well, of course not. Nobody claims that it does, as far as I know.

So far, nothing relevant in this chapter. I'll soldier on, though...

The next section is called "Mutations".

He declares that mutations can ony be harmful and that no useful mutation has ever been observed. Perhaps he'll have an alternate explanation for new viruses appearing? Perhaps he thinks they all come from outer space?

He gives us three reasons why mutation is not an engine of evolution:

1) they can only do harm (not true)

2) mutations add no new information to the organism's DNA. Wrong. See http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/information/apolipoprotein.html

3) a mutation must affect the reproductive cells in order to be passed on to the next generation. Is he trying to tell us that changed DNA won't be passed on unless the changed DNA is passed on? I think so.

That's right, folks, evolution is impossible because there is no way for it to have happened.

I'm really starting to regret starting this. I've gone through four chapters and, so far, I've got nothing but empty assertions, logical fallacies and false claims.

Another chapter or two tomorrow.... maybe. It depends on how much lies and willful ignorance I'm willing to expose myself to.

One thing thats curious is that we have yet to hear from his follower from the Apologetics forum. :)
Indeed. I even provided a direct link to this thread.

He sounds like a normal creationist to me. Lie about evolution and then tell everyone that the lie wont work (I think even Evolutionists would agree with him on that. :D ) so evolution wont work.
I agree. I don't know whether or not I have the stamina right now to wade all the way through this particular sewer. The trouble is, if we don't sometimes take the time to respond to this claptrap they shout about how we're afraid of their arguments and that nobody has ever debunked them...

If the moderators will indulge me in permitting this one almost completely off-topic post...

I may not have time to get back to this until some time next week. I'm preparing for the Kispiox Valley Music Festival. I'm one of the coordinators and my band will also be playing there, so I have a full plate.

If any of you travel to northwestern British Columbia in time for the weekend and take in this small but wonderful and free-spirited music festival, I'll see you there! :D

Keep it up, Wicked Old Atheist! It's fascinating.
It's getting less fascinating to me, though. ;) He's merely got a very slightly different angle on the same old soundly-debunked creationist arguments. If I feel like it, I might do at least one more chapter in the next day or two.

Sorry for my ignorance but how can evolution denial undermine Islam?

It's the arguments used in denying evolution that undermine Islam. Those arguments are based on the same Biblical literalism used by Christian creatonists. Thus, we get the same insistence on a literal Adam and Eve and Fall in the Bible. Once you have that, then creationists can link the Fall to the need for a Savior and voila, you have Jesus as the Savior. Which, of course, is contrary to Islam.

Islam is based upon the OT, but maintains that the OT Judeo-Christianity has is a flawed version. YEC insists that the OT is the correct version.

have you noticed yet that you are getting the same arguments nearly word for word put out by AiG, early Henry Morris, and Kent Hovind? Apparently this is the first creationist book you have read. Compare this to Denton's Evolution: A Theory in Crisis or Henry Morris' Scientific Creationism or Duane Gish's The Fossils Say NO!

Pure plagiarism.

I started reading a creationist textbook (it was written in a style resembling a highschool science text) in the late '70s or early '80s. I was a Christian creationist at the time. However, the intellectual dishonesty and faulty reasoning in the book turned me off so much that I begain reconsidering my position. I haven't read one since then.

I've read some of the stuff on Hovind's web site and I've got the MP3 of the debate between Hovind and Pigliucci on the Infidel Guy internet radio show. Of all the current creationists, I'm most familiar with Hovind. I expect that even some creationists find him embarrassing, though. Example: according to what Hovind said in that debate, the reason men have nipples is that the skin of the chest had to be joined together somewhere.

Anyway, I think I've read enough of "Yahya" to dismiss him. He claims to have destroyed Darwinism but, in the chapters I've already covered, it's plain that he's done no such thing. In the next chapter, he explains how the fossil record "refutes evolution".

No transitional forms, gaps in the record, the Cambrian Explosion, misleading partial quotations from Dawkins, etc. You know, the same old tired lies. At this point, I'm not inclined to spend more of my time on it.

So compare Hovind's web site and Evolution Deceit. There are a lot of similarities.

Yahya's data and arguments are not valid. No one is saying that. I'm simply saying that they are not original to Yahya but are plagiarized from Christian YEC.
