WYSIWYG Editor for Posting!

Alright, here is our newest feature!

When you click on "New Thread" or "Post Reply" you will now get a WYSIWYG post editor similar to MS Word - you will see what your post is going to be like straight away! It will be very easy to choose fonts, font size, font color, cut and paste, as well as post links, bullets, numbering etc. BBCodes will still work. The automatic smilie panel works just the same as before.

Try it out now!

This may not be compatible with older browsers or Netscape. If this is the case, you can disable the WYSIWYG option and revert to the old system by clicking on the "Profile" button at the top of every page, then on the "Options" link, and clicking the WYSIWYG option to "No".

Oh dear.  It takes us old ladies a long time to adjust to new things.  I notice the smillies now go directly to the bottom.  Okay, I'll get used to it.

I just clicked on color & got color----cool!


 

The smillies are right next to each other when I click them on the page, so that's cool too.  I usually have to move them over.  Nice.

Yeah - the smilies are located at the end of the post automatically rather than where the cursor is...

It's a side effect of the new feature... I will see if I can fix it... there are a few bugs I'm sure... I will try to find them and fix them as they come.

Any hope of making it an optional feature? It's another of the things that doesn't work without JS, and my browser (Mozilla, there isn't any IE for my computer) can't filter JS on a per-site basis... so if I can't post without JS, I probably can't post at all.

You should be able to turn it off in the User CP (profile)

EDIT: You using Linux or something?  Just curious   BTW, I think it only works with IE 5.5 or better; Opera doesn't like it either

EDIT AGAIN: Erwin, you can add the vbCode buttons back into the templates and they will work (the default ones at least).  I coded support for them into vbcode2.js before the other guy who helped me write it decided he didn't want them.

EDIT ONCE MORE: Erwin, if you do add the vbCode buttons back in, make sure you delete the line in vbcode_buttons that says "<script language="javascript" src="vbcode.js"> and move it to all the non-wysiwyg templates.  Otherwise there will be some problems

You're quite right, I can turn it off in the profile. YAY!

As to your other question: NetBSD. When I'm not using NetBSD, I'm using BSD/OS. When I'm not using that, I'm on a Mac which has had IE surgically removed from it for security reasons. If I'm not using one of those, I'm using a Windows machine, running Mozilla, with JavaScript turned off for security reasons.

You may notice a trend here.

I can see how the WYSIWYG editor would help people a lot, although I bet the average amount of content-free markup in posts will more than triple now. ;-)

I'm a bit weird; I think the vbscript is perfectly comfortable and friendly, because I know about 5 other markup languages, so one more is nothing.

I do indeed see a trend.  I have to use IE; I can't stand the other browsers, they just don't look good.  And as for an Unix; I can't stand the fonts in X11.  I tried to do the big switch to SuSE last week, but the fonts killed my attempt.  As for BSD, I had FreeBSD running on my P200 for a while, and was going to try it on my main computer, but I discovered no support for 3D (essentially).

And for the record, all the WYSIWYG editor does is write it into the posting window (keeping it simple) in HTML, and then it converts it to vbCode.  So using vbCode will allow you the same amount of functionality as the WYSIWYG.

Also, forgive my thread hijacking, but don't ever get me started on computers, LOL

I've heard that about the fonts before, but I don't mind them - admittedly, I use huge fonts on a high-res display to reduce jaggies.

I know that the vbCode has the same functionality - but I bet people will *use* it a lot more.

I can't get the smilies to work. I try to paste, or to right click and drop, and the edited copy has a bunch of coding in it.

I think I'm gonna go sit in the Freezer and pout.

Tip:

You can use MS Word shortcuts in the new WYSIWYG interface.

For example:

Ctrl-B for bold (again to unbold)
Ctrl-I for italics
Ctrl-U for underline
