  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wow. That's quite an opportunity for you.

It is quite a blessing, yes. However, the reason I get such an opportunity is because my dad travels internationally...meaning I only see him about 6 months of the year. :(

Abundant love,
Simon

I am fairly critical of WYDs. I don't think a week long event will suddenly turn lapsed young Catholic of Europe into evangelical, knowledgable, orthodox Catholics.

It all seems like a very large gimmik. Every Diocise in the UK is spending all the "youth devoted money" on promoting this event rather than actually giving decent catechesis to the youth.

Of course in itself the idea of WYD is good but the centrality it now has! That is absolutely ridiculous.

It actually makes me angry.

Young Catholics should rather be being sent on conferences nearby to them which teach orthodox Catholicism and make them actually Catholics again.

Perhaps you have a point here Mark. I have never been to WYD so I wouldn't know. Is it becoming more of a social event? perhaps Life Teen'ish?

Although I still am not so much in favour of WYD being seen as the primary catechesis- I think I will actually be going now ;)

The vocations director in my area said he was able to subsidise the cost loads, down to £150 which is about $90, so I would be silly not to go at that price!

Markh,
I disagree. I know, because going to something similar changed my life. The Pope came to St. Louis in 1999, and was one of the youth who got to go to the youth rally. I was a senior in high school, and a step away from becoming a lapsed catholic (at the time I would have told you their was no hell and other cafeteria catholic nonesense). I went not because I loved the pope, but because I felt like I shouldn't give up a chance to see him. God had other plans. That day brought me to my knees. I was balling when the Pope came in, and I knew instantly that he loved me. The message I post in my signature really got to me. When I looked around me and saw 20,000 other youth feeling the same thing about man who was telling us not to do everything are culture was telling us to do I knew that I had been home all along. It started me on the journey to the conservative Catholic I am today. Remember many of the youth going to WYD would never go to a conservative conference. While there are concerts (which introduced me to Christian pop) there are other great speakers. Plus, it helped me realize the special place the pope has for the youth.

I'm going... I'm going... first time. Even while I was IN Toronto during WYD, my company wouldn't go because there were 'too many people and they just didn't like crowds and it would be so busy in the city'...I STILL regret not having gone against them. But I felt it would be rude towards my host.

Thankyou for sharing that, it is a lovely story. We live in a society that really doesn't value children and teens. Babies are aborted, children are ignored, teens are over-sexualized by our culture and exploited. That the Pope makes time to focus on lifting up the young is a great gift.

Many young folks are spiritually lost because noone has taken their spiritual needs seriously. They have a great need for love, and if they do not know how to get it from God, they will go looking for it in all the wrong places. I think WYD is good. Following up those WYD experiences with solid religious Ed is also good, too...
