  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wrong about Rasputin?

I've been reading and looking at writings on the Pre-Communist days of Russia after watching a miniseries that made Czar Nicholas II about as incompetent as possible, and made Rasputin sympathetic yet also a heretic, sex addict etc. But I stumbled on this piece today, and thought I would post that really disagreed with the typical views of not just the Czar but also Rasputin. I did do a search on the board, and notice that Rasputin is very popular like somebody posting a thread every 12-16 months on him. It is an interesting perspective and not one I have heard before....

Rasputin

Recent Russian (= Non-Soviet) scholarship has proved that Gregory Rasputin was the object of the most awful slander and gossip. Why? Because the slanderers wanted to justify their hatred for the Monarchy through the Rasputin legend. Research by authors like A.N. Bokhanov has taken place in the archives, not in gossip and pornographic forgeries. Rasputin was purposely misrepresented in a Russia without censorship (unlike Western Europe), but also without laws against defamation. He had to be demonised by those who hated him because he was a real Christian. Russia did not fall because of Rasputin, but because of those who slandered rasputin and the government of the Tsar with him. Absurdly accusing Rasputin of virtually running the country during the War, the fantasy which they projected, most of these slanders came from degenerate aristocrats or wealthy, power-hungry bourgeois.

Rasputin had no political influence on the independently-minded Tsar; he lived in Siberia until 1914 and visited the Imperial Family only when the Tsarevich was ill. ‘Rasputin’ does not mean ‘debauched’, it means he who lives where there are no roads. He was not mad, or a mystic, or a heretic, or a horse-thief, or a monk; he was a pious married layman with three children. One daughter, Matrona, died in Los Angeles in 1977; a great grand-daughter is alive and well and lives in Paris. He was not a depraved drunkard who was very rich. True, he had peasant manners, but then he was a peasant. Money given to him by the rich, he generously gave to others and to his village church. He died, or rather was cruelly murdered, in poverty.

Rasputin was recommended by St John of Kronstadt and Bishop Theophan (Bystrov) for his sincerity. A devout Orthodox Christian, with a miraculous gift of healing, he spent much of his time in monasteries and at prayer. He was a pious peasant healer, sent by Providence to heal the Tsarevich, who performed miracles. Jealous and idle aristocrats tried to corrupt him with alcohol, and he was murdered by them. Among these aristocrats was the transvestite occultist Yusupov, and British secret agents. Yusupov, a great admirer of Oscar Wilde, was a cowardly homosexual who had shirked his military duties. He was not only a cold-blooded murder, but also a liar. Rasputin’s murder dismayed Russian peasants, of whom Rasputin had been one, for they felt that it meant that corrupt aristocrats would always stop any of them from getting close to the Tsar.

I have heard both that he was as bad as everyone says, and also not as bad as everyone says.

so I dunno

I think he acted with a level of familiarity toward the Czar's wife that made people uncomfortable, and as a "peasant" he probably had a bit more influence in court than could be tolerated by the the Czar's comrads.

Years back I read the book: The Life & Times of Grigorii Rasputin, by Alex De Jonge. Rasputin had a lot of heterosexual adventures but there was a caring & virtuous part to him also. There was a point in his life when he had a mystical experience & went to Mt. Athos ( chapter 4). Tragically, he encountered homosexuality & left in disgust (a few rotten apples situation).Years later in spring 1914 Rasputin was stabbed by a female follower of, & given a blessing by, an expelled monk named Iliodor ( Sergei Trufanov).

This ended up isolating Rasputin from the Royal family as he recovered from his wound. Meanwhile, militarists in most European powers ( Russia included) pushed for war. Rasputin was a true patriot but had been a prominent supporter of peace & watched events unfold with foreboding. In July 1914, Rasputin sent an urgent telegram to the Czar imploring him to stay neutral.

Dear friend,

Again I say a terrible storm cloud hangs over Russia, Disaster, grief, murky darkness and no light. A whole ocean of tears, there is no counting them, and so much blood. What can I say? I can find no words to describe the horror. I know they all want you to go to war, the most loyal, and they do not know that they will destruction. Heavy is God’s punishment; when he takes away men’s understanding it is the beginning of the end. You are the tsar, the father of your people, don’t let the lunatics triumph & destroy you and the people, and if we conquer Germany, what in truth will happen to Russia? When you consider it like that there has never been such a martyrdom. We all drown in blood. The disaster is great the misery infinite.

I should add that the telegram quoted above was the most serious in tone among others Rasputin had sent.

Yeah that letter was played straight in the miniseries. He dictated it to his wife, it was portrayed like he had some kind of vision/ revelation, and urged the Czar to not enter the war.

I know, I think he did go through a rock star like phase but I think he came to terms with it. There does not seem to be any evidence that he terrorized women.

He was not idle during WW I also. He had sound plans for rationing & distribution of food & goods during war time. DeJong states, “He understood more than any conventional advisor the hardship caused by shortages & rising prices-the cost of living for the working classes doubled over the war years. These were indeed the immediate causes of the unrest that turned into the February ( 1917) Revolution...” ( chapter 16).

A large part of the Rasputin story was the Czar's wife, who was a bit of a mystique and felt Rasputin had the power to ease her son's hemophilia symptoms. Unfortunately, Czar Nicholas II was weak and refused to stand up to his wife's eccentricities. He let the rumors, many of them started by his political opponents, run rampant before he acted. By then great damage had been done to the Russian monarchy. Then his two relatives murdered Rasputin and exacerbated the situation.

The Russian government was incapable of dealing with the challenges of a modern society, throw in WW1 and the Russian defeats to Germany and you have the makings of a perfect storm. Unfortunately, the initial reform government was displaced by the Bolsheviks, who were generously funded by foreign persons who had scores to settle with the Czar-or so they thought. The rest is history.

Fr. Andrew is onto something, but takes it too far. You can even find an akathist to Rasputin somewhere on his site. That's flippin' bonkers. Was Rasputin the devil incarnate? No. Was he a holy martyr? No.

He is no saint nor a mystic but not an evil villain neither. Reminds me of one of the stories related by Pope Gregory in his dialogues:
.... By which miraculous vision we learn thisvthing concerning the life of Stephen, to wit, that in him the sins of the flesh did strive with his works of alms. For in that he was by the legs drawn downward, and by the arms plucked upward, apparent it is, that both he loved to give alms, and yet did not perfectly resist the sins of the flesh, which did pull him downward: but in that secret examination of the supreme judge, which of them had the victory, that neither we know, nor he that saw it

He was part of various heretical cults and gained favor with the tsar because he helped Tsesarevich Alexei during a hemophiliac episode. The kid nearly died. I'd be a fan of whomever I thought helped save my child (and in this case only male heir to the throne) and kept them from dying. Unfortunately, Rasputin didn't stay in his lane.

Rasputin is very "mainstream" in popular culture, video games, etc. I used to love reading up on him and Nostradamus when I thought was a myth. Its an interesting back and forth on what he was exactly (devil or Saint), but I will always distrust the spirit of the age and their pushing him as some weird tragic magician figure while downplaying the fact that Russia was/is Christian Orthodox for most of its 1,000 years.

Have you read the revelations of St John of Krondstadt?

St. John of Kronstadt. The Vision of Our Holy Father John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt
Again I saw a large group of infants who had suffered for Christ under Herod and had received crowns from the Heavenly King. We walked further and went into a large church. I wanted to make the sign of the cross, but the starets said, “It is not necessary to cross yourself because this is a place of abomination and desolation!” The church was very gloomy. On the altar was a star and a Gospel book with stars. Candles made of tar were burning and crackling like firewood. The chalice was standing there covered by a strong stench. There was a prosphora with stars. A priest stood before the altar with a face like pitch and a woman was under the altar covered in red with a star on her lips and she screamed and laughed throughout the church saying, “I am free!” I thought, “Oh, Lord, how awful!” The people, like madmen, began to run around the altar, scream, whistle, and clap their hands. Then they began to sing lecherous songs. Suddenly lightning flashed, a frightening thunderbolt resounded, the earth trembled, and the church collapsed, sending the woman, the people, the priest, and the rest into the abyss. I thought “Oh Lord, how awful, save us!”

The starets saw what had happened, as did I. I asked, “Father, tell me, what is the meaning of this frightening church?” He responded, “These are the earthly people, heretics who have abandoned the Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church and recognized the newly innovated church, which God has not blessed. In this church they do not fast, do not attend services, and do not receive Holy Communion!” I was frightened and said, The Lord has pity on us, but curses those with death!” The starets interrupted me and said, “Do not mourn, but just pray!” Then I saw a throng of people, each of whom had a star on his lips and was terribly exhausted from thirst, walking here and there. They saw us and yelled loudly, “Holy Fathers, pray for us. It is very hard for us because we ourselves cannot. Our fathers and mothers did not teach us the Law of God. “We do not even have the name of Christ, and we have received no peace. We rejected the Holy Spirit and the sign of the cross!” They began to cry.

I followed after the starets. “Look!” he said pointing with his hand. I saw a mountain of human corpses stained in blood. I was very frightened, and I asked the starets, “What is the meaning of these dead bodies?” He replied, These are people who lived the monastic life, were rejected by the Antichrist, and did not receive his seal. They suffered for their faith in Christ and the Apostolic Church and received martyrs' crowns dying for Christ. Pray for these servants of God!”

He was from Siberia and the book I have cited mentions he was from an environment that was very freewheeling & harsh ( because it was Siberia, not overly violent & criminal though). This does not excuse his hedonism but it is not right to say he lacked principles also. His attempts to prevent World War I were genuine. He tried to offer plans to help Russian society deal with rationing during war time because he knew the plight of common people unlike the czar’s aristocratic ministers. He must have obviously known the tensions from the Bloody Sunday tragedy of 1905 remained & that was before his influence with the czar.
