  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Your gonna get a thousand different answers to this but what works for me is watching a movie. Watch a movie that in some way or another has some sort of meaning to you and reminds you of what your writing. I get inspired that way and after a minute or two staring at my paper or computer I start writing like a madman.

Granted, this may not work for you but like I said your gonna get alot of methods.

try starting with an outline. since you know you want to write the book, you must know what it's about. the original outline doesn't have to have any structure - just start wherever and start casually cranking out the sequences of events. i currently have a ten page document saved to my computer for a novel i want to write, but all it is is me writing as me pouring out things as they come to me. i can go back and add, change, and delete. even though that's not the novel i'm working on now - this one is probably gonna be my next - because of all the think-work i did, i'll be able to get started a lot quicker.
give it a shot. it doesn't have to make sense to anyone but you. good luck!

I would recommend trying to just write and not worry about whether or not you have anything to say. A lot of the time, when I get stuck because I don't know what to write just sludging through it works pretty well. The momentum kinda builds up while I'm writing. But really, I've never been able to develop a flawless strategy for writers block. At the very least though, write down exactly what you're thinking. It'll help.

I have more than a hundred, maybe two hundred files on my comp that contain each about 2-12 pages of notes in small writing.

pinkgurl, my advice to you is this: find out what you like to write about, and start your book with that. For instance, I like to write about ancient cities (I write High Fantasy), so I did the prologue of my book about a group's journey into an ancient city, long overrun by their enemies. From there, things picked up easy. Wish you well! God bless!

Oh the wonder of writers block. I am such a procrastinator, I have so many ideas and very little pressure to do anything about them. The best advice I have about writers block is to just write something, anything to get you going. If you have an idea maybe work on some of the scenes you have in mind. It will eventually come. Oh and what usually helps for me, as I am a student, when I procrastinate on something I try to be productive else where. For example, I have a paper to get finished tonight, but I don't feel like doing that right now, so I'm in the middle of another poem I needed to work on.

In short, use procrastination as a tool!

Very well said. Use procrastination to your advantage. If you can't think of what to write, what I do is just sit around and think. Yes, you may look like you're not doing anything important, and your family will probably pester you to no end when you're busy thinking about your writing. But use this to your advantage, too: Think about plot while unloading the dishwasher. Contemplate character development while folding laundry.

It took me four years to finally start writing my novel. Most of that time was spent figuring out the plot and whatnot. Trust me, novel writing isn't a race. If you can't figure out what you want to say, don't stress it. Just sit down for a while and think about it.

I'm deeply inspired by music, all kinds of music. Ideas often hit me like lightning when I'm in a dark room with my headphones on soaking in a song. If I start to get a block, I go back to what I was listening to when I was originally inspired. If that doesn't work, I branch off into similar things and try to get the next part of the idea.

Even if it's not music that inspires you, the same principle works. Try to go back to the original thing that lit the fire in your mind, maybe you'll find what you're looking for.
