Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Would you want God to interfere?

Yea, but only mine!

Any bets that every single sporting event that makes it to TV there is at least one prayer for victory for each side? Which wins?

To keep this simple, I think we'd have to work under the premise that only your prayer will be answered, as this is as far as you are concerned, your own personal reality. Wouldn't life get boring if all your prayers were answered?

Only if you were lucky or careful. If the prayers are irrevocable things could get far worse than boring. One would need to be careful to never pray in anger.

On the boring I agree. A couple of decades ago one of the science fiction shows dis a bit where a petty thief gets killed and goes to his 'reward'. The guy in a white suit he meets is played by Sebastion Cabot. He gets his every wish. Finally he questions his placement in the afterlife and they go to examine his records. There we find out he is real scum. He says this proves he is in the wrong place, he does not belong in Heaven. That is when he finds out he is not in heaven. Cabot can have a very nasty laugh.

Clearly God isn't male or female, but she is so often referred to in the masculine sense so just doing my bit to re-address the balance. Would you have rather I had referred to God as 'it'?

I also recall a real possible monkeys paw case of answered prayer.

Long long ago when a bowl game was a big deal, back in hte days where second in the Big 10 or Pac 8 (yes 8) or for that matter tied for first and losing the tie breaker, meant no bowl...

Boston College had their best year ever. Undefeated going into their last game with Holy Cross as a favorite not just to win but to destroy poor Holy Cross. It is known they did pray before the game, did they pray for victory? I do not know.

But I do know what happened, they played and lost. Their dreams of an undefeated season and a bowl game gone.

They had a victory party planned, no one felt like going, no one went. Oh did I mention they had it planned for Bostons swankest night club, the Coconut Grove. Yup that Coconut Grove and yes it was that night.

Yes.

"It," would have been less incendiary.

But, c'mon now, that wouldn't be fun now would it?

What's incendiary about calling God a she?

Is there something inferior about being feminine?

I might just pray that I would always be happy. Having that one prayer answered should be enough.

I high percentage of congenital idiots seem to be happy almost all the time. One should be careful what they ask for.

Obviously, "It" is apparently preferable to "She" or "Her". Apparently some stripes of male chauvanism apply even to the deity some people profess to be subject to.
As we've seen in other threads, yes, being female or ascribing something as feminine is inferior.
(Please note, Im not trying to derail this thread...Im just addressing cantata here, nothing more)

This is a question that non-theists and theists alike can answer... Can we work under the premise that the Christian God exists, but she doesn't interfere with life whatsoever.

You say "the Christian God", but then you say "she" and that God doesn't interfere with life whatsoever.

Which is it? The Christian God or a deistic "she" god?

So, would you really want your prayers answered if it were possible? If so, to what extent?

Not in the sense that you mean, no.

God does answer the prayers of His people. That doesn't mean He answers them the way we think He should.

Essentially, what you're asking is "would you like God to be a cosmic genie who gives you whatever you wish for".

In that case, such a God would not be worthy of our worship.

Why not just describe Him as He describes Himself: in male terms? In the Bible, God is always "He" and the things of God are always "His".

The Bible says that God is a man of war, not a woman of war.

And, besides, you know that we find that disrespectful to God so why would you do it, other than just to show that you're disrepectful?

Do you really think God would be as upset about it as you are?

Don't you ever worry that you make God look like a capricious dictator with the endless legalism or a spoiled brat when complaining about all the little things that offend him or you?

Yes, actually, I do. Moreso, in fact.

In the Bible, God makes it very clear that He takes the use of His name and His character very seriously. And why shouldn't He? His name and His character are holy.

Don't you ever worry that you make God look like a capricious dictator with the endless legalism or a spoiled brat when complaining about all the little things that offend him or you?

No.

I'd pray that I was the right person, in the right place, at the right time, and did something incredibly risky/stupid and lived, and then got the medal of honor for it. If you can manage a medal of honor unpostumously, you have it made for life.
