There are so many...but the top of my list has to be the Harry Potter films.

Romany

I thought the first two were great, the third was disappointing, and I'm glad Jose Cuaron isn't directing the fourth.

has anyone mentioned Ella Enchanted? That made me feel like crying. At least try to follow the book!

I read the book after I saw the movie and liked it. Unusually for me, I am able to think of them as two completely separate things and enjoy both!

My pick is Frankenstien. The book is fascinating!!!

Heh, I was just gonna mention Ella Enchanted. I loved the movie so much that I went out and read the book. For the first time, I think the movie version was actually better.

Now, Angela's Ashes was a HUGE dissapointment. The book is so engaging, but the movie was just dark and dull.

Really? I love the book and thought the movie came nowhere near doing it justice. I also hate Anne Hathaway as an actress, that might be part of it.

I think the worst movie ever made that started as a great book was Time Machine. They absolutely butchered that novel!!

I can't think of any off the top of my head because I don't read that much, but the worst book that I have read that was made into a movie was Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles. I had to read that book in college-I absolutely hated it. Hardy is too detailed-he basically takes five pages to desribe a flower! Golly, just get to the plot.

The film by Roman Polanski is not that bad though.

The Lost World. For that reason alone, I have a stong distain for Steven Spielberg. He took a good book, apparently couldn't refrain from changing the MAIN CHARACTERS, rushed through the story in about a half an hour, and turned the rest into "Dino's Attack Tokyo." If I had wanted to see King Kong, I would have watched that!

Now I understand its difficult to turn a book into a movie and not be a letdown. They have to worry about what the movie will be rated (PG, PG-13, ect.) and they have to fit it into a timeframe so people won't be turned off by the prospect of sitting in a theater for seven hours. But if you can't keep the characters and plot the same, don't make the movie. It's really that simple. For that reason, when I finish my books, I'm holding on to those movie rights just in case anything comes of it.

Starship Troopers, which spits in Heinlein's face and more or less calls him a fascist. While I don't agree with the political philosophy from the novel, Heinlein deserved more respect than that.

Loived the book, but the only thing that was actually good about the movie was the music score...

Also add the second jurassic park movie to the list.
