Because he was doing two things, I believe. He was God, but he also had taken human form to fulfill a mission he had set for himself. On the cross he expressed the fact that there was no one to save him.

Where does it say in scripture we should TRY our best to obey God? if you walk in the spirit you are being obedient to God as a result, because the Holy Spirit is working through you. Jesus said I am the vine you are are the branches, who ever abides in me will bear much fruit. Christ abides in us the moment we are resurrected in him. Its not our obedience that brings us favor, but it is Christ obedience given to us that brings us favor. Christianity isn't about trying to obey, that was the work of the old law which was of the flesh. Instead Christ works through us as he lives in us. Christ living in you brings you his favor from the Father. Jesus shares his riches with us out of love.

I agree but obedience is not accomplished by the flesh but by the spirit. Its not about trying to keep commandments, the old covenant was about trying to keep commandments, and that way was insufficient.

Isn't it strange that Jesus rebuked the Jews NOT for keeping the commandments, which He says are necessary, but for CHANGING them?

I think keeping the commandments is part of the deal.
