As an avid fan of the game and a Christian... and not having read all the posts above let me answer you.

No, World of Warcraft is not evil. While it does have magic and demonic beings and such in it and you can choose to play a warlock, you can also choose to play a Paladin (and go around slaying the demons (which most quests have you doing anyways) and warlocks) or as a Warrior (which doesn't use magic). But it's just a game. It doesn't really matter that it has magic and demons in it. It's not real.

That said, if your father doesn't want you to play the game, then don't. Obedience is more important than a video game.

Also, if it's a stumbling block (IE: hurting your relationship with God or others) then it's a good idea not to play it. No sense making an idol out of a video game.

World of warcraft is not evil in or of itself.

If you are having problems in your spiritual life when you're playing, then don't play it. It's really simple.

For your father, his views are far too legalistic to be taken into account of this and yes i understand where he is coming from and it is motivated by concern which is okay. To some it is a mere game to be enjoyed, for others, it can have real effects on their spiritual growth.

One line. If you are having doubts, don't. Simple. But if you want to play it just for fun, then that's okay.

Just remember, garbage in, garbage out.

there are names that sound demonic.
you can play as a warlock.
Ephesians 6:2 "Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3"that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."

Sounds like your Father is a wise Christian, it may be well if you followed his instruction in this matter.

If you like mmorpg’s there are alternatives. Anarchy Online is pretty good, it’s technology based as opposed to magic like what WoW plays with. If you like PvP there is PlanetSide or WWIIOL which are good mmo’s. Quite a few out there that do not have magic and all that junk. I know a guy that is working on a Christian mmorpg, maybe that will be fun for many Christians to play that are fed up with all these bottom-sewage games as well.

Millions of paying subscribers and near-unanimous critical acclaim disagree with you as far as WoW being "bottom-sewage".

Oh, I dunno about that. Even as a paying subscriber, I would say WoW is pretty bottom-sewage in its own way. Or at least, the forum-goers are. Just browse through the WoW boards to see what I mean.

Really, WoW succeeds because of the lore and the brand name. If it was a brand new universe created by some other company, it would not be nearly as popular as it is now.

The thing I like the most about WoW (aside from the setting) is actually the modding scene. Very few other MMORPGs let you customize the interface so completely.

The thing about making a Christian MMORPG is that it's a Catch-22. You can either make a bad game that nobody plays, or you can make a successful game that people play all the time, in which case, how would it feel to know that you are directly responsible for getting a bunch of Christians addicted to a game instead of spending time with God/family/friends?

Again, I have to disagree. While the Warcraft universe is popular, given the quality of the game as a whole I think it's pretty firmly established that it succeeds in its own right. Lore and brand name do not equate to success, as evidenced by Star Wars Galaxies. WoW succeeds because it provides an MMORPG experience that feels fun and worthwhile through the entire level-up process. Then it manages to create an end-game that keeps experienced players returning.

You mean, create an end-game where you're forced to farm hours per week hoping you get the drop you want. Then win a roll vs. 39 other people, or bid DKP on it?

Or play the game 12 hours/day 7 days/week for 3-4 months straight in order to rank up to Grand Marshal? This of course means, pretty much completely ignoring everything else in their life (family, friends, jobs, health) in order to attain this? It's so bad that on some servers, people actually have to get together and agree not to compete with each other (let a couple players get the top spot every week until they hit Rank 14, while others don't pvp much, then switch around)

If that's your idea of a good game...

As for SWG, SOE has nowhere near the brand name recognition of Blizzard as far as gaming goes. Remember film fans does not necessarily equal game fans (plus, with so many SW games, the fanbase becomes pretty diluted). Nor is SOE associated with Star Wars, rather, Lucas Arts is, and SOE merely has a license. The Warcraft world on the other hand, is tied completely to Blizzard, who's also famous in the gaming community for Starcraft and Diablo as well. Star Wars games? The general consensus is Star Wars games are pretty bad as a rule.

Which will no doubt be another low-quality game with little to no imagination in it.

I'm in a high-end raiding guild, and we all find the raiding experience very enjoyable. By the way, if you're in a guild where you ever end up rolling against 39 other people for something, get the heck out and join a decent raiding guild.
Or play the game 12 hours/day 7 days/week for 3-4 months straight in order to rank up to Grand Marshal? This of course means, pretty much completely ignoring everything else in their life (family, friends, jobs, health) in order to attain this?
Yet apparently there are people who enjoy doing this for whatever reason, enough to create the sort of competition that requires such an effort. I'll be the first to admit that grinding to Grand Marshal will never be my thing, but that doesn't mean I feel it reflects poorly on the game. Fishing's not for me either, but I think it's cool that they included it.
It's so bad that on some servers, people actually have to get together and agree not to compete with each other (let a couple players get the top spot every week until they hit Rank 14, while others don't pvp much, then switch around)
If they can organize that sort of cooperation, good on them. Another common solution I've heard of is to share battlegrounds grinding characters so that a given character is always in the battleground even if one of its players is working, sleeping, etc. That allows people to maintain their lives while still working towards a lofty goal like Grand Marshal.
If that's your idea of a good game...
I sincerely feel that WoW is the best MMORPG on the market right now, and that even were it taken distinct of all other products it would be a wonderful product irrespective of relative standing.
As for SWG, SOE has nowhere near the brand name recognition of Blizzard as far as gaming goes.
Are you kidding? SOE was Everquest! Everquest! Combine that with the Star Wars license and you've got a built-in subscriber base that, if kept, would be larger than anyone could compete with.
Remember film fans does not necessarily equal game fans (plus, with so many SW games, the fanbase becomes pretty diluted).
Not necessarily, but usually. And I don't think that fanbase diluting actually happened. When SWG came out, every Star Wars fan and their mother had a subscription.
Nor is SOE associated with Star Wars, rather, Lucas Arts is, and SOE merely has a license.
Sure, but that doesn't mean people didn't see the Star Wars logo on the front and the MMORPG acronym and scream like little girls and run to the register as quickly as possible.
The Warcraft world on the other hand, is tied completely to Blizzard, who's also famous in the gaming community for Starcraft and Diablo as well. Star Wars games? The general consensus is Star Wars games are pretty bad as a rule.
Buh...? I realize there have been a handful of mediocre ones, but TIE Fighter? Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight? Knights of the Old Republic? Some of the most well-reviewed video games of all time are Star Wars games. They probably hold nearly as many Game of the Year awards as Blizzard games do.

I see this game consume the lives of so many of my friends and people around me.. this game requires too much time. Imagine if people were that passionate and addicted to spending that time in the Word instead! Many people who I know who play this game have nothing better to conversate about then the game.. and for the people around them it appears quite silly. IF you have the discipline to limit your time of game play less than the 4-12 hours I see others playing it.. then I see nothing wrong with it. However I do not see the possibility in this game due to the requirement of reaching a high level.. which is time consuming. People put so much effort and thought into creating these super high level strong characters to go around pwning everyone and get powerful.. put that effort into your own life! Expand your knowledge of the Word, better your character and witnessing abilities! Form some real life relationships, learn social skills! You will learn nothing of important life skills from this mass of screen pixels. Go experience life and learn what God has in store for you. The only WoW in heaven will be our Savior.. all these earthly things will pass away and be no more.. so don't waste time delving into the things of this world. You are a believer. You know what matters and what is real in life, go use this and tell others about it.. this is what matters after the world has passed away.

Don't be a hobbit and ignore the evil that is present and the fact that you can do something about it.. go out and be a warrior lvl 70 for JESUS!

3. Look up Romans 14. You should find that passage helpful here.

"22So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin."

If you're having doubts about the game (or anything in your life for that matter), maybe the Holy Spirit is trying to call you away from whatever it is in your life that God does not want you to be distracted by. Dive into prayer.

Indeed, that would go for ANYTHING. If you're seriously letting anything take over your life by playing more the game more than 6 hours every single day, just take a break and eat :p lol
"You will learn nothing of important life skills from this mass of screen pixels."
Actually, according to the majority of scientists taht have been conducting new studies on video games, would disagree with that statement :D But no need to get into that topic when it's not being discussed.

how much time you spend on a video game depends on how much you like it. It's not just that video games 'take up' too much time in life. Sure for some people they do, but somtimes a game comes around that caters to someone's every fantasy and imagination, it just cries to be played. That is what WoW is to some people, the epitome of what they've always imagined.

WoW is a great place for fellowship too. I play in a dominate Christian guild and there is always fantastic fellowship to be had. :) Made lots of great friends. And it doesn't take a huge amount of time to play. My wife and I play together (which is great to be able to play with my wife) almost every night for 1 to 2 hours. We are already level 43. :)
