  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How many hours a week do you work or spend doing actual schoolwork (study time counts but only if it is more studying than watching tv or looking on youtube)? And how old are you?

I am a hospital nurse and having been picking up an extra shift each week (different hospital so no overtime). The last few weeks I have been doing 48 hours and hope to continue that to pay off a few bills. No school right now but need to start back soon and I might drop back to my schedule 36 hours when I do that because I expect to do it full time to get my last year done quickly.

I'm a full time university student.

Ummm, I suppose I spend like 10 hours?
Unless I'm doing an essay in which case maybe 30 hours a week?

I'm not a very hard worker obviously. :p

If you are a full time student...that is usually considered a minimum of 12 hours of week just sitting in class...assuming that you don't have any labs.

What do you do with the rest of your time?

Flagrant amounts of drinking and making poor use of student loans. Isn't that what we're supposed to do?

Ummm, well I have four classes, 2 hours each, and then I do some reading and stuff, so maybe more than 10 hours but not much more. :)

Is that really considered "full-time"? 8 hours is usually considered a part-time student.

Well, not here I guess?! That's just how my classes are scheduled.

I mean, obviously we're supposed to do work at home, but depending on what I'm working on there's not always much for me to do. :)

For the record, in the U.S. the minimum unit total for full-time students is 12 units, not sure if that's consistent worldwide, however. Also, the general rule of thumb is three hours of study on your own for every hour spent in class. It can get a little murky when you take online classes though (3/5 of my classes this semester are online) so I try to dedicate about anywhere from 6-8 hours per week working on those.

I don't know what a unit is.. the system in the UK is very different
But I go to a legit university, honest! :)

I'm a full time student, but currently it is summer break for me. This means a break from normal and I hope to be working 20+ hours a week until classes start up again.
Once in school study time will depend on how easily classes are for me, but it'll likely be 50 hours a week between work and school(35(class hours plus two hours per credit studying) and 15 hours a week work.)

My last day was Friday so technically none. I was working about 35-40 hours a week at my last job. College for me was more than a full-time job if I included everything that brought in income or involved in school, this would be an average week...

15 hours of class
25 hours of homework (reading, out-of-class assignments, etc.)
12 hours of work
8 hours of fraternity activities (meetings and intramurals)

60 hours on average, and that's probably a low estimation. During October (pledging and Haunted House) and early February (Sing Song), it easily crossed 100 hours. I'd have 18 hour days, and do schoolwork though lunch and dinner.

I don't doubt that.

Over here, a unit is a measure of credit for each class. For example, a class may range from 1-4 units depending on the amount of involvement (a lab class is typically four units because you'll get around three hours of lecture and 2-4 hours of lab work per week; but a basic recreational class like golfing might be 1 unit because it doesn't require much work in or out of class). U.S. students generally measure their course load by how many units they take per semester (3-9/semester for part-timers and 12-18 for full-timers).

On average a Bachelors degree requires the accumulation of 120 units, so at full time that's five classes per semester for eight semesters, or four classes per semester for ten semesters. Some really ambitious students might take six classes per semester and finish college in roughly three years but it's rare for students to take that many units for consecutive semesters.

In the US, I usually have 5 classes that are 3 hours each per week. For my semester abroad in the UK, I had 4 classes, 2 hours each. Each class will transfer as 3 or 4 credits, so 12-16 total. Still full-time. It's just a different system. More independent study.
