Hi,

I know about the biblical clarity on wives role in marriage, i.e. the concepts of submission to their
husband, that the husband should be the spiritual leader, etc.

But I am curious if there are any biblical references to the issue of who should be the financial
provider for the family. Does the bible ever specify whether the husband should be the bread winner,
or is this just a custom of culture?

How does this all relate to the massive numbers of women (and wives) that are currently entering
the workforce?

thanks,
mt

The wife of noble character in Proverbs 31 was industrious, making a profit from buying, selling and investing.

Also,Susanna (Luke 8:2,3), followed Jesus and supported him financially. Not much is said about her, but she was one of several women that did support Jesus' ministry in a financial capacity, according to Luke.

I think a lot of people feel that it's realistic to have to work.

I know there are a few Christian men on this forum that prefer to stay home. I guess that has to do with the wife's job. I know a women at our church who got offered a huge job as chief surgeon in the states. She has a new baby and they all decided it was best for them to move and for the husband to stay home with the kid. I guess it depends on the familys situation

You really ought to read Proverbs 31 to answer your question. Also yes woman are to be submissive, and i completely agree with that but also men are to love their wives. Surely it doesn't matter who is the main 'breadwinner' as long as the marriage is right in the eyes of God?

God's sole purpose for a woman has ALWAYS been centrality of the home and she is to be cared for and ministered to.

The wife can work along side her husband in the same feild but not seperate, she can sell the fruits of her labors/crafts, horticulture ect.

She is to be active in Charitable work -giving to the poor

According to the Mishnah, a wifes duties included:

Grind Flower
Bake
Launder
Cook
Nurse the children
Make the bed
Spin wool
Hospitality
Care for the guests
Prepare children for school (usually take them to school)

A husbands role included:
provide-food, clothing, shoes, and give $ to the wife for her personal expences.

soo if the wife is doing her job at home how can she have time for anything else?????

without knowing the Lord Jesus Christ personaly and being filled with the Holy Spirit there is NO more hope of making a marriage work the way God indended it to then you do of finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

For more info on the roles of the wife and husband I would sugest finding the sermons that John MacArthur did on Ephesians 5:22-6:4 I think that it will open the Spiritual eye's of some people. http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/WIFEROLE.HTM

That makes a woman sound like a child. And I have alot of doubt that you, or anyone else, knows 'god's sole purpose' for someone. No offence.

Just remember that while women may have on average a slighter higher IQ than men, they are unable to really pick up any of the suble nuances which would allow them to participate in the political and business world. Plus with thier erratic emotions, they often need to be "cared for" and kept within the boundries a man has set for them. They are however naturally good servants and excell in serving a man they have emotionally bonded to.

Yeah, right!

OK soo the WORLD does say that it is ok for a woman to be over/above a man. Is it ok for a woman to be the "leader" of the home. So on and so forth.......

But the Word of God says just the opposite of what the "world" says or thinks. The Word of God does nothing but life up woman and praise her. For it is the mans job to protect her, provide for her, she is the object of care provision, and concern, lastly he is to love her the same way that Christ loved the Church which is to die for her!!!!!

The Christian person is to have a totlay different standered of living then the world does.

If we look @ Genesis 2:18-25~~God's design for marriage

God said that is was NOT GOOD for man to be alone, so He made him an apt (suitable) helper.

there is a leader here ~man
there is a follower here~woman
mans provision is willing and beautiful
the womans submition is the same
no struggle/fighting

But since Genesis 3:16 there has been a "flipping" of the roles between man and woman aka "The CURSE"

lastly I have this for you straight from a sermon of Dr John MacArthur : Titus 2:5
*** 2:5 To be
discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

You say, well, "keepers at home." What does it mean? Let me tell you. I did some work on the word "oikouros" (Greek), kind of sounds strange. Comes from "oikos" (Greek), "home" "ergon" (Greek), "work." It simply means to "work at home." I am going to go right ahead and tell you what I really feel that this is saying:

"I think that women ought to work at home--profound, huh?"

You say, "Where did you get that?"

"Right there!"

You say, "But I have a wonderful job!"

Well, the Bible says, "to work at home!"

You say, "But we need the money!"

Well, the Bible says, "To work at home!"

You say, "But my kids are in school!"

Well, the Bible says, "to work at home!"

Yeah! Let's get those women back in the kitchen where they belong! Let's keep them tied to a role dictated by a several thousand year old religious text which only a minority adhere to! Forget this societal advance idea, it's stupid!
