Hi everyone! My class has been given an interesting assignment by my AP English teacher. We're all to pick a pong that is poetic/deep/talks about the meaning of life/has substance, etc. Songs are really just poetry when you get right down to it.

So anyway, once we've picked a song, we're to develop a lesson plan for teaching it. I have to teach this song to the class for 20 minutes. By teach, I mean analyze it's deeper meanings, much like you would analyze the meaning of any other poem, i.e. talk about literary techniques like symbolism, allusions, and discuss what the songwriter is really talking about.

I also have to come up with six questions to have the class answer as homework. I will be providing the class with a copy of the lyrics, and the class will listen to the song before I begin to teach it.

Anyway, here's the part where I ask you all for help. I want to choose a Christian song, whether it be Gospel, a hymn, or more contemporary Christian music or Christian rock. What I'm hoping is that the song that I pick will give me an opportunity to use as a witnessing tool. This is a wonderful chance for me to bring God into the public schools, and share His Word with my classmates. So I'm looking for a song that would best enable me to do this. One that provides ample opportunity for me to share the Gospel while teaching it. Maybe one that quotes Scripture? It doesn't have to though.

My problem, though, is that, believe it or not, I don't listen to any music at all. Well, ok, I'm a cellist, so I listen to Classical music, but not anything else. So, I know absolutely nothing about Christian music, and have no idea what to pick. I'd love it if you could give me suggestions, including titles and singers/songwriters, maybe links to lyrics, or where I could download/purchase the music?

Also, I'm going to try witnessing to a friend by using a variety of approaches, one of which is showing him fulfilled Bible prophecies. Can you think of some good ones that a non Christian would find compelling? Particularly recently fulfilled ones, or ones which are about to be fulfilled? The rebirth of Israel in 1948 springs to mind (Ezekiel 37 and Mathew 24) Can you think of some others?

I'm working on some dispensational material, but it's all currently in demo form :(

Michael Card's "Death of a Son" comes to mind which is based on the prophetic Psalms.

Keith Green has several evangelistic songs... "Don't You Wish You Had the Answers?" and "Altar Call" jump to mind... although they're not quite along the lines that you've outlined.

Steve Taylor has "Whatcha Gonna Do When Your Number's Up?".

If you don't mind indy stuff, I can recommend Redeemed out of NC. Very clear and several clear gospel-oriented songs. Their site has song samples and lyrics.

 Plug ahead...

I have a song based on Hebrews 9:22, one based on Rev 3:20, a song based on the futility of religion and another on the futility of worldliness. I make reference to prophecy ("The One whom He promised us is come; the root and seed of David has come" etc.), but I don't have a song based solely on the prophetic scriptures...

Good idea you have. We don't follow cunningly devised fables, but the testable Word of God. Our faith is not a blind faith! I am thankful that you have a heart for presenting the evidence of God's Word to lost classmates!

WARNING: Cheeky bit ahead... :sorry:

If you've followed some of the threads in this forum, apparently the best way to reach people for Christ is to purposely avoid the scriptures, avoid mentioning Him, be positive, and hope they'll figure out their lost condition and their need for Christ... in fact, apparently some bands think that God called them to such a ministry!

Thanks again for caring for souls! and for not being ashamed of the Bible!

He's a song that has a lot to do with find purpose in life. It's by Furthermore and it's called "Letter to Myself". ...Not sure if it's poetic enough for ya' but if nothing else it's a good song to read & hear. Check out: http://www.further-more.com/

lyrics:

Dear Me,
I already know how you’ve been because I am within you, as existence or conscience or ideas, whatever makes you me. But I love to help. Please rely on my before you say goodbye.

*Chorus* Goodbye, should I say goodbye? Before you say goodbye. Goodbye, should I say goodbye?

Anyway, I wish the best. Let’s go take a look inside of me. There no words that I can write for what it’s like… read on intently. You will face a number of disturbing thoughts, yelling matches, and culture shock, truth is fiction, a lot of confusion, maybe some addictions, but don’t give up hope yet. It gets worse… all the way to the nurse. Staying home, memories are spilling, actions are lies, surprise, it’s unfulfilling. Trust me on this, no crime is as bad as meaninglessness. Your will, will wither and intense fear may begin to flutter in the pin where butterflies fly.

*Chorus* Goodbye, should I say goodbye? Before you say goodbye. Goodbye, should I say goodbye?

The truth is that there is a lot of miracles in medicine, you will get to know them well. Well, haven’t you grown? Now on your own, independence was the goal, now you miss home/homesick. A relationship may save you or enslave you count on both to happen. Trap in decisions wrapped in ambiguity. You and me fasten to answer to actions. I’m behind your passion for life. I don’t want you to cash in yet. It’s too easy to be content apathy and disbelieve in even me. I love to help, so please rely on me before you say goodbye.

*Chorus* Goodbye, should I say goodbye? Before you say goodbye. Goodbye, should I say goodbye?

Sincerely,
Me

this is a great song by kutless. and personally i think it is an easy opening to what Christ did on the cross and why.
Passion

Within my mind's eye
Flickering from the past
Come images that terrify and calm
A paradox in me

Nail pierced hands they run with blood
A splitting brow forced by the thorns
His face is writhing with the pain yet it's comforting to me

He chose to give it all
Jesus endured the pain
Paying a debt I owed and created a paradox in me

Nail pierced hands they run with blood
A splitting brow forced by the thorns
His face is writhing with the pain yet it's comforting to me

And in my heart I know that you're the only one
Who could of came and died, a sacrifice
As your God's only son

Nail pierced hands they run with blood
A splitting brow forced by the thorns
His face is writhing with the pain yet it's comforting to me
