How often have I heard it said from a non-Catholic, "you guys are so hung up on sex!". A puritanical approach casts a bigger shadow. That is why I am not convinced celibate priests are the way to go.

I agree and I don't think celibacy adds to anything. I'm sure it must be extremely difficult for priests to maintain. I find sometimes it is very difficult to connect with priests on matters related to family, children, etc. And I believe it is because of the celibacy factor.

On the whole same sex thing, I just don't understand how the church continues to view this as a threat. Same sex marriage or relations does not affect my rights or life at all as a heterosexual man. Also, at least here in Canada where I live, same sex couples represent less then 1% of the population, and it's likely always been that way and likely always will be. It's not like same sex couples are "taking over" and there's certainly no "gay agenda" out there as I've seen it described as. When I hear stuff like that, and you only have to go to popular apologetics websites to see it, it makes me cringe. My two cents.

The Catholic Church does seem to have a very unhealthy obsession with sexuality, doesn't it?
At times it seems that sexual sins are the only ones they worry about.

When I converted, the first Catholic online forum I visited (not here) seemed to be the very same way.

They were very orthodox, but an inordinate number of threads trended towards sex.

LOL Paul. Ii disagree with control. I think that we should be allowed to think for ourselves, not be made to just accept blindly. There is a word that I want to say but have to follow the rules of the forum. So just simply, no one is God. Therefore no one has the absolute unfettered truth. No one person. Truth is many faceted. Pilate never said a truer word than when he said What is truth?

I've been ridiculed for saying something similar on CF. Divine intelligence must be so far above human intelligence. We are not meant to know the complete truth in this life, just get lots of hints on the way.

That's the way I see it Paul. Truth is many faceted. We don't all see the same thibgs at the same time either. Or perceive things the same. I believe utterly that we were given our brains, and ALL of our faculties, to USE. Not to ket them remain stagnant and become robots, or brainwashed or even brain dead.

I think, from reading your last two posts, that you have a well grounded view of our faith and the Church.

I have had a few occasions to meet with priests (and one bishop) to discuss my doubts and concerns. When our diocese was deeply involved in covering up abuse and protecting priests rather than children (and vulnerable adults) I met with our pastor. I told him that my Church was now the parish, that I was basically renouncing any allegiance to, or any requirement to obey those in authority beyond my parish, whether bishop or pope. This also occurred at the same time as the ill-advised investigation of our nuns, so both situations had me steamed. I said I would obey the laws and rules of the Church that applied to me when interacting with the Church and its members but that I no longer accepted the moral authority of my bishop or the Pope. I told him that they had lost all credibility with me and with many other people. I told him that I would continue supporting the parish but would no longer make any direct contributions to the diocese.

Then I asked if I needed to leave the Parish or stop coming to Mass and receiving communion. He smiled and shook his head. No, I didn't have to do any of that, he said. He had heard the same from many other parishioners. Over the next couple of years I became more involved than ever with my parish. I felt at home there, whereas the institutional church beyond that meant little to me.

Since then, with the passage of time, I softened somewhat, especially after Pope Francis came on board and ended the investigation of our nuns. My former diocese and its members paid a huge price for covering up abuse, but not as big as the price paid by those who were abused and then abandoned. I still get a little steamed thinking about it all.
