With continuing vote counting, Trump has slid beneath the 50% mark.
We shall see, what the final vote count will reveal.

The article is about the MAJORITY of all votes,
not about who won the most votes.

Trump has been claiming that he has won a clear mandate from the
voting American citizens. But, so far, he has not won over 50% of their votes.

What on earth are you talking about.

Trump received 2.5 million more votes.

Clearly, he won the majority of votes in the majority of the states. Also, the Electoral College shows a good sized win for Trump as well. Trump also carried the GOP to a majority in the Senate AND the House. The liberal media can spin this all that they want. But there really does appear to be a mandate for Trump and populist conservatism.

It will be interesting to see how this ends up
(currently) 49.87 percent means that a majority of all votes cast (50.13%) went to candidates not named Trump.

Not sure why it matters, other than this was not a landslide victory. It was still a legitimate victory.

The idea of "Rep by Pop" never flew, so the popular vote count doesn't affect the final result.
It has to do with whether of not the electoral college should exist. When I candidate loses the electoral college but gets more individual votes, supporters of that candidate rally for the abolishment of the electoral college system.

I don't think so.
It appears to have more to do with the claim of a majority "mandate." Even if the election were based on popular vote, Trump has the most (unlike last time). As of the moment, more voted against Trump than for him. Which means his "win" is not a mandate to run roughshod over the country.
fwiw, I oppose ending the Electoral College but favor overturning the laws that stymied/stagnated it from original intent.

Maybe we should ask why ballots are still being counted at this late date?

I'd only agree with that on an individual state level, resulting in a re-count of points in support.

Another question comes to mind: What would stop the election from becoming a full blown popularity contest without the electoral college?

There's several contributing factors. Such as but not limited to; paper ballots, with required hand counts, differing deadlines for absentee and mail-in ballots to be recieved (ie post marked by election day).
It's not unusual for it to take a while. It's one of the reasons why the certification doesn't take place until January.

Who cares? He was going to steal the election either way it goes. Now lwt's look forward to small business being uprooted and billionaires being exempt from paying taxes while the working middle-class foots the bill for the tax exempt billionaires

No one wins a majority in the USA because many do not vote, sometimes their logic too is sound. Sure we can ignore them because after all they did not vote, but they contribute and pay taxes all the same and as citizens it is their right to vote or not to vote.

For some reason it takes California the longest time to count their votes and the popular majority Trump has conveniently decreases.

There was a situation in the Pennsylvania Senate race between Republican challenger ( now Senator elect) David McCormick incumbent Robert Casey. It was a most tight race and dragged on for a couple of weeks even though it was considered 99% complete before the end of the first week with McCormick the victor ( popular vote in this case of course).

Finally, the circus ended and certain county officials in Pennsylvania were found to be finding any possible way to tip the balance for a Democrat win.

The same trend seemed evident in the 2020 Presidential vote count in Pennsylvania. For days Trump was ahead but Biden’s “surge” was in the later, “fully legitimate” ballots. Of course others can argue that Trump tried to strong arm Raffensberger in Georgia for 10,000 votes in 2020.

It seems we need to go back for more discipline in voting on Election Day itself and having reasonable ( but limited) allowances for absentee ballot votes.

Regardless, Trump got more popular votes than Harris. But the mandate is more rooted in the fact that the Republicans also retained the House and regained the Senate. They also hold the majority of the state governors as well, for what that's worth.
