  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Is it ok for me to read books ware a witch or wizard is the hero? I have not read the harry potter books but I do have books made for more older readers that have witchs and/or wizards that are the lead chareter of the story. I dont think what I am doing is wrong but I would like to see what you guys think.

I also placed this in fantsy and Sci-Fi (I was not sure ware I was should ask)

of course it is ok! i really cant expound on it much more than to say that the stories you'll be reading are fiction and as long as you are sane enough to keep that in mind and not become one of the insane people who stabs his friend with a sword or such (as im sure you wont) then there is no reason why you cannot full imerse yourself in the joy of such novels!

Well, CD, I guess it would depend on if you're a Christian or not. Seeing that CD has a pagan icon, he feels that it's okay.

Other Christians will also say it's okay. I think even reading such material can be harmful. God tells us not to mess with sorcery or witchcraft and the the like.

Deuteronomy 18

9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

While you're not exactly participating, you are reading about it. I think it opens you up to the devil's deception. I think perhaps you should be choosy with what you read, watch, and do. Ultimately the decision is up to you.

Are you really so weak-minded that reading Harry Potter would lead you to witchcraft? No? I thought not.

I have to agree with that^.
Product placement works because of people like you. If you're so easily swayed by the actions of a protaganist, then you might as well stop watching all forms of media.
If you aren't so fragile as you make yourself out to be, I'm pretty certain you know you shouldn't fall into things just because one author makes the stuff sound cool. (I'm worried if you take Philosophy class... :|)
As long as the "evil" stuff isn't prolonged, gratuitous, and you have a discerning mind, you should be fine.

Before this thread gets out of hand (which threads like this sometimes do), please remember to be courteous to one another. One way to do this is to observe this rule:

2.5 You will not start a thread or post a reply directed at another member. Replies must be directed at another member’s post, not the individual. Individual communication should be done via PM. This includes, but is not limited to:
a. Accusing another member in public of breaking a rule (including calling him or her a troll or a sock-puppet). Please report any rule breaches to the staff.
b. Posting in public that you have reported another member.
c. Responding to a post (by telling the poster he or she is breaking a rule) or quoting text which is in violation of the rules before or after you have reported it.

Directing your comments at a person's post rather than at the person him/herself often helps avoid hurt feelings and misunderstandings.

Thanks for your help in keeping this thread friendly!

If you're capable of reading something with the understanding that it's purely fiction, then go for it. If not, maybe they're not for you. People are affected in different ways by what they read and watch.

For me, I can read Harry Potter (and other fantasy novels) and enjoy them, but know that it's not actual witchcraft. After reading it, I'm fine. It's entertainment. But I stopped reading full-on crime novels (and watching crime shows), because I felt negative and depressed after reading/watching a serial killer go on a rampage, and autopsies and the like. But that's just me. Other people can read/watch these kinds of things and not be affected.
